Her Life

A Sad Day - from Sheri McCoy, Avon CEO

November 14, 2014

It is with great sadness that I share the news that Xiaochun Luo, Group Vice President and Chief Scientific Officer, passed away yesterday afternoon. Our sympathy, hearts and prayers go out to Xiaochun’s family, especially to her husband Wei Dai and her two sons Byran and Brandon Dai.

We all feel the loss of such a talented, beloved and respected colleague and friend. Xiaochun’s passion for science, innovative nature, and clear strategic focus were highly valued. She was an exemplary role model for the Avon values which, along with her mentorship of many colleagues, leaves behind a strong culture in our R&D community.

Xiaochun had a passion for translating technology to consumer benefit and served as Chief Scientific Officer and head of Avon’s global Research & Development organization since 2010. This appointment came after an impressive earlier career with Avon. Xiaochun joined Avon in 1999 as Director for Global Hair Care and was promoted to Executive Director for Global Hair Care and New Product Innovation in May 2001. After quickly establishing herself as an outstanding scientist and leader, Xiaochun was promoted to the role of Vice President, New Technology and New Product Innovation in December 2002.

Xiaochun personally had a hand in many of Avon’s best innovations including the anti-aging skincare technology program that has led to many breakthrough products in Avon's facial and body skincare categories, including Anew Clinical Line & Wrinkle Correctors, Anew Clinical Laser, Anew Alternative Intensive Age Treatment, Anew Ultimate, Anew Rejuvenate, Anew Reversalist, and cellulite and stretch mark treatment products. She also successfully directed technology programs that led to innovative products in color cosmetics and other categories such as MagiX Face Perfector, Daring Definition Mascara, Pro-to-Go Lipstick, Advanced Techniques Lotus Shield, and MegaEffects mascara.

Prior to joining Avon, Xiaochun worked for ten years for Procter & Gamble's Global R&D organization.

Xiaochun received her PhD. in Biochemistry from Purdue University and has authored numerous scientific papers and book chapters in biological research and beauty product fields. She was also involved in the research and development of numerous patented inventions.

Xiaochun was a strong advocate for getting more women and girls involved in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math). She was highly esteemed in this area and in 2012, she was selected as one of the 100 Women Leaders in STEM from the organization STEMconnector. Xiaochun was passionate about this work, and in her honor, we will be establishing a STEM-related Avon Scholarship for the children of Avon Associates.

Today is a sad day at Avon as we mourn the passing of this colleague and friend, Xiaochun Luo.

With respect,

Sheri
