Her Life

A Memory from Rochelle

April 9, 2012

"When I think of my Aunt Adele, the words that come into my mind to describe her are “loving, caring and extraordinarily giving”.

Kindness and compassion were embedded in her DNA. She had a wonderful outgoing, humorous and self-effacing spirit, and a super-nurturing soul. I don’t remember her ever asking for anything in return. She just accepted people the way they were, and was always there ready to run (literally) and help when you needed to be comforted.

She adored my Uncle Jack and Alicia, and was fierce in protecting them. And they adored her. She tolerated almost anything. I never saw her get angry except at things that might do them harm.

I remember once when I was in college, being horribly sick with food poisoning. She refused (there was simply no argument about it) to allow me to stay home alone, and took me to her house and cared for me for several very long days until I was better.

Later when I had my own kids she would see us off to the airport and make sure we had all had snacks to eat and of course bottles of ginger ale in case we got thirsty! She never stopped thinking of other people.

She was truly a special woman and I will always remember her with love and fond memories.
Rochelle Easton. "

The Full Obituary and more

ESKEN, Adele Ziff

4 July 1916 – 1 April 2012

95 years of A Fabulous Life. Born in Brooklyn New York to Sarah and Jacob Ziff. Passed peacefully as classical music played with her daughter Alicia snuggled beside her.

She wasn’t the usual Mother - she was simply amazing! She disliked the PTA, she was glamorous and fun, a devoted daughter and sister (siblings Paul, Walter and Pearl, all deceased).  Married to the most handsome man, Jack for 33 years before he passed in 1985 while walking their dog Simone.  Adele relocated to Los Angeles after the death of her sister.

She was devoted to her daughter Alicia and that devotion was returned each and every day. She adored all animals, once ripping her dress for a cloth to tend to a dog’s injured eye.

She loved boating with her husband, my father. They were a frequent foursome to her sister Pearl and husband Sandy (also deceased). She loved her family and friends.

Often Adele would open a box of chocolates and everyone (family or friends) would get into a bed and watch some black and white film. Her early years as a girl were spent on the beaches of Brighton Beach. She had a model’s body… So much that had her one and only child, me, thought I was adopted because she had a 20-inch waist after giving birth.

Adele was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s at age 85. We continued our Champagne lunches at hotels, museums treks and drives down the coast for the next four years. I told her every night since her diagnosis how much I loved her and was blessed to have her in my life.

She is survived by her daughter, me, Alicia, Granddog(s) Fiona,  Hazel, Grandcats, Julian, Kalei Picchu, Mo, Luna and David (all deceased).  An aunt to Rochelle, Susan (now deceased), Sheryl, Joy, Vivian (deceased), Myrna, Karen, and Steve, great aunt to some 17 grand-nieces and nephews and a great-great Aunt to another nine. Her caregivers and hospice nurses were remarkable. Adele touched so many lives.

I know in my heart she and my father are dancing the foxtrot, looking sensational as the rest of my family are applauding them.
There was a celebration of  Adele’s life We celebrated in style at my home with all Adele's favourite food, corned beef sandwiches, cel-ray soda.

In lieu of flowers, please make a donation to any Shelter Animal Rescue in your area.

Goodnight my sweet Mommy, I love you always xoxo.
