General Adetunji Olurin (rtd)
An officer and a gentleman!
This seems to be a particularly apt place to start for it really does sum up the man. General Olurin embodied the finest of these characteristics: honourable, disciplined, fair, courageous, loyal ... and more.
A man, not given to bombast, never demanding to be heard, relatively softly spoken, but with a voice loud enough to be heard by anyone who cared to listen to him.
I was among a privileged group of “aburos” that regularly and informally chatted with him after our Sunday church service. As he spoke animatedly about a variety of topics, from the state of the nation, to the Super Eagles, you instantly realized that he loved to engage with people.
Paradoxically, he was a people-person without being an extrovert. He was a simple man, easy to talk to and someone who seemed to be completely unaffected by status.
Our Sunday morning “tête à têtes” were sadly disrupted by the pandemic but we did relatively recently have a long telephone conversation about everything and nothing – as is not uncommon on occasions such as this, I regret not reaching out to him more frequently.
We will miss you, sir and may your soul rest in perfect peace.

TRIBUTE TO GEN OLURIN

“The General is Gone”

These were the words of Aunty Kehinde at about 11.00 pm on 20/08/2021 after Uncle Tunji took his last breath.

General Olurin was indeed an officer and a gentleman. My first real interaction with him was as a member of Victoria Fellowship Church Men’s fellowship about 8-10 years ago. He was a great story teller and was always on form talking about one military exploit or the other.

Uncle Tunji was keen on sharing his experiences as a father, not to lecture you, but for you to realise the privilege and importance of your role as a father. He did say he used to cook for his sons when he was he visited London, maybe I will verify this someday.

He would be dearly missed.

TRIBUTE TO A GOD'S GENERAL AND FINE OFFICER. A WONDERFUL MAN AND A RARE GEM. FROM MRS OKIKIOLU IBIRONKE

Where do I start the tribute of late GEN. Adetunji Idowu Olurin, who was a wonderful man who embodies all the attributes of a perfect gentleman. His family and mine have been together for over 35years. His wife and l were relating as sisters from the same parents.  And l always referred to him as uncle. First and foremost I want to state that my dear late GENERAL Olurin was a remarkable, caring, warm hearted rare gem and a devout christian. Indeed he was an embodiment
of a caring gentleman..

Besides, he was thoughtful, compassionate, loving and so much more to his immediate family, family friends and colleagues.
He will forever be remembered as a warm, loving, kind and open hearted gentleman.
He was a man of prayers, a devout christian who served the Almighty God to the best of his ability.
He would always be remembered as a kind hearted person and a lover of peace. He is humble, caring, selfless, accommodating, and extremely affectionate.

Oh we have lost a rare gem, an amiable man. Our hearts are crushed and sad. Uncle your absence will be felt quite deeply. The way you smiled and acknowledge everyone with smiles, filled the world with love and happiness. Moments with you were never dull nor dark, your light always shine.
You are a pillar of strength to the people around you, with things you do or say always. This is a testimony to your good account on earth and the sweetest memories we shall treasure till eternity in remembrance of you.
I still recalled the last day l saw you at Luth you were smiling and waiving to me and my sister in-law Mrs Nike Ashiru not knowing that was the last time l would see you. What a great loss.
Death is but a change in form; you have only gone to rest. Death is a painful debt, filling hearts with pains and sorrow, but you will always be in our hearts.
In our nostalgia, your memories will fill us .You will be in our midst, though unseen and unheard anymore, like Angels till we meet again..
My dear Sister Mrs Kehinde Olurin and the children Babatunde and Olumide the Lord will comfort you all in this period of grief.
May the Eternal Rock of Ages and only God grant you Eternal Rest. Amen. Adieu.

His Excellency, I always called you. You have been our hero and role model since your days as Military Governor Of Old Oyo State when, from seeing you on TV, we loved your beret always placed at that beautiful angle and the swag in your movement. Jide and I always loved and admired you. Little did we know that when we moved to Lagos, we would not only meet you in person but become family.
You lived such a full professional and private life. A soldiers soldier you were, so dedicated and strived for perfection in whatever you did be it in your Military Career, Governance and your Duties to the Church and Humanity.
How can anyone ever forget your commitment and daily supervision on site during the construction of Victoria Fellowship Church Building to which you were the Building Chairman. You were on site everyday supervising the project!! That is an example of the level of your commitment in service and in whatever you laid your hands to do.
What Joy it was for you the day the Church was dedicated. I have seen many examples of such joy, happiness and fulfillment in various landmarks in your life be it Birthdays; Your Sons on their Glorious Milestones and Achievements; Your Grandson Demilade’s naming ceremony with him in your arms as you did the Family Oriki; and celebrating your wife, your beloved Kehinde a truly virtuous woman.
What a blessed man you were; very special to God, otherwise how can one explain the various scraps with death you had gone through and come out standing and victorious.
You were such fun, regaling us with stories on life issues, your parents, career and God. Oh how I loved those stories. I requested that you please write your memoir for posterity as it would make for such an interesting reading. I truly hope you did.
Your Excellency, you fought a good fight, won the race and have heard the Master saying Well Done My Good and Faithful Servant as you are adorned with your crown of glory.
Goodnight His Excellency, your memory shall always be a blessing.
- Oby Anubi.

My dear big brother Tunji,it was a privilege and honor to know you since we joined Victoria Fellowship Church. I vividly remember where you sit in church so calm and relaxed in God’s presence. A perfect gentleman man with few words and from the way you comport yourself, one could hardly tell the height you attained in life both in your military career and governance. You are dearly missed but my joy is that you walked with the Lord. Rest in perfect peace.

TRIBUTE
General Olurin, the news of your death came as a rude shock! I still can't believe that you have gone away from this side of eternity. I wish you just surface from that travel. But alas, you have gone to a greater beyond, a better place where there shall be no more mourning or pain, a place prepared for you to rest from all your labour.
"Man who's born of woman is of few days and full of trouble" - Job 14: 1
"Look away from him that he may rest, till like a hired man, he finishes his day" - Job 14: 6.
You have fought a good fight, you have finished your course, you have kept the faith: henceforth, there is laid down for you, a crown of righteousness which the Lord shall give you.
God will keep your wife and preserve her life. Her faith is very strong in the Lord. God will keep your children. He will keep those of us you left behind.
Sleep on in the bossom of our Lord and Saviour, Jesus Christ, till the resurrection day, when we shall meet to part no more.
You will surely be missed! A o pade l'ese Jesu! Goodnight!
Mrs. Lanre Disu.

TRIBUTE TO GEN ADETUNJI OLURIN
Gen ADETUNJI OLURIN, was a solid gentleman and an officer.
A loyal, considerate, compassionate, and a man of few words, deep thoughts with calculative responses.
A very diligent family man who cherished family relationships both nuclear and extended; especially the church family.
He was very tactical in exhibiting great wisdom and courage in very challenging circumstances.
His exploits as ECOMOG Commander speaks volumes of a dedicated, objective focused and highly strategic Cmdr ,whose gains were untainted and irreversible during the campaign against Charles Taylor.
Gen ADETUNJI OLURIN was the Chairman at my first Daughter’s wedding. We had not built the present church in Victoria Fellowship Church at Alma Beach Estate, Lekki at the time. As the Chairman he prophesied that the next wedding to be celebrated in VFC will be at the new Church building. At the time, I was the chairman of the Church and Gen Olurin was the Chairman Building Committee. He was a dedicated Church member who took church responsibilities very seriously and saw the completion of the Church as a task that had to be promptly accomplished. I remember himself in company of Gen Teidi, of blessed memory took the task of the Church Building as a personal responsibility that could not fail. The next VFC wedding took place at the present Church building and thus his earlier prophecy came true. Gen Adetunji Olurin was a member of the PAC Team under the leadership of Mrs Dada Alamutu.
Gen Olurin was an unsung hero whose objective was always to achieve stated objectives. A man of great wisdom and tact.
General Olurin invited me to undertake a task in Ekiti when he was administrator in the State . It was a first hand experience of his sincerity of purpose in achieving defined objectives.
A contented senior Officer whose motives always were centered on the elevation of the State rather than self. He had no time for frivolities and personal agendas. A thorough bred administrator whose pocket was never the target but the well being of the Unit.
To your amiable ever joyful and cheerful wife Mrs Kehinde Olurin, be comforted by the the scriptures that gives us the hope of eternal life when you will reunite at resurrection morning.
God henceforth has taken over your responsibility because He is the husband of the widow.(Psalm 146:9). The legacy of goodwill and integrity that trailed his service posts every where he served is an evidence of a fulfilled life.
To his wonderful Children Babatunde and Olumide be comforted by the Holy Spirit who has promised to surround you His warm embrace. He heals the brokenhearted and binds up their wounds.(Psalm 147:3).
Nigeria has lost a loyal, dutiful and highly committed Statesman who believed strongly in the unity of the nation. We have missed in our midst in VFC a dependable and trusted adviser and counsellor . My fellow companion in VFC community, line 1 , second row will no longer be on parade every Sunday. Consequently,I will need to relocate to a different location within the Church building for obvious reasons.
Indeed like Paul you have fought the good fight, you have finished the race, you have kept the faith. There is reserved for you the crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous Judge, will give you on that day, and not only to you but to all those who have loved his appearing.”(2 Timothy‬ ‭4:7-8‬ ).
Good night a worthy Statesman of Nigeria, a passionate soldier of the cross, a diligent and loving husband and father. Sleep on till resurrection morning. Shalom.
