The daughter of the late Mary Ryals Leggett and Gassoway Leggett, and Sam Roberts, Mrs. Strother was born in Petersburg, VA. She had been employed with the Department of Defense School System, later retiring from Dimon Elementary School as a paraprofessional. She was a devout member of the Cathedral of Prayer COGIC where she was the "Mother of the Church". She was preceded in death by her husband, SSG (Ret) Reuben P. Strother, and a brother, James Ryals.

Survivors include: her sons, SSG (Ret) Sam A. Roberts (Jackie), SGT (Ret) Reuben C. Strother, Kevin L. Strother (Jackie), Devin D. Strother and CPL Keith W. Strother; one daughter, SPC Agnes A. Strother; thirteen grandchildren, four great grandchildren; a sister, Lula Raines; a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
