OBITUARY

Aida DeLeon Salumbides sadly passed away on Wednesday, June 30, 2021 at home peacefully in her sleep. She had just celebrated her 82nd birthday on Sunday June 27th surrounded by her family. During her long battle with Alzheimer's, she was cared for lovingly at home by her family.
Aida was born in Natividad, Pangasinan, Phillipines to Bienvenida and Sylvester DeLeon, Sr. in 1939. She was the fifth child and youngest daughter out of 8 siblings.
Aida married her soul mate and love of her life, Rafael Cocadiz Salumbides (aka Raf or Handing) on June 11, 1966 in Hagåtña, Guam at Dulce Nombre de Maria Cathedral Basilica. Together they raised three children Ralph married to Jessica, Gina with Christopher Fransen, and Rachel married to Joseph DeGuzman. Raf and Aida have four grandchildren Joseph Christian, Lauren Adalia, Joshua Mark, and Juliana Zoey along with grandpuppies Alice and Lucy and a grandkitty Oliver.
Aida's hard working personality and caring nature was magnified during her long career as a nurse. She started in 1959 at Ortañez General Hospital School of Nursing and graduated with the Class of 1962. As a young nurse, she moved to Guam to work at Guam Memorial Hospital. She was a head nurse with the Medical Surgical Unit eventually becoming Nursing Supervisor for the whole hospital. She retired after 18 years of service. She also worked as a nurse in Jacksonville, Florida for 2 years until moving to California to be closer to family. Aida and Raf moved the family to Vallejo, California in 1984 where she picked up her career again at Merrithew Memorial Hospital now known as Contra Costa Regional Medical Center in Martinez, California. She retired as one of the best Charge Nurses at the hospital in 1998.
All of us who knew Aida, knew of her devotion to God. She was a founding member of St. Catherine of Siena Church in Vallejo, California and worked tirelessly to help fundraise for the building of the new church. She was also a member of the Eucharistic Ministry team and gave communion to multiple care homes for many years. Aida was an active member of Cursillos in Christianity and even made a religious pilgrimage to the Holy Land, visiting Rome, Italy twice.
Aida and Raf were world travelers and loved to experience different countries and cultures. They took three trips to Europe, and  took cruises to Mexico, the Caribbean and Alaska. As much as she loved to see the world, she loved a good meal. One of her major skills was at the stove. She was an amazing cook with the ability to feed a hundred people a delicious home cooked meal without batting an eye. Entertaining large parties was easy for her. Aida  also loved flowers and planted many roses in her garden. She had a green thumb and her garden flourished under her care. She especially loved to plant fruit trees and collect cymbidium orchids.
With her family, she was an active member in her hometown organization NAUSA or Natividad Assosiation of USA which worked extensively toward the betterment of the community back home in the Philippines and strengthening of the connection among town mates living here here in the States. She was coronated as a queen on  April 19, 1986 during a Town Fiesta dinner and ball in San Francisco, California.
Aida had a beautiful warm and generous soul. She loved to sing and dance. At social gatherings, she and Raf were the first ones on the dance floor and the last ones to leave it. She even threw parties and hired instructors to teach her and her friends the latest dance moves. She had the capacity for joy and laughter that could fill a room from the moment she walked in. Aida also possessed a spine of steel with the heart of a lion and a temper to match. But should anyone at all call for help, her heart was open to give aid, lend an ear, give advice, or just a hug. She loved her family immensely and was the first to help any member in need without questions asked, even helping her younger brothers go to university. Aida lived her life full of joy with her family despite her struggles with Alzheimer's. She fought the long hard battle to remain with her loved ones, but now can rest fully at peace with God.

I remember every time I went over there as a kid- she would always give me ice cream and when I left she’d slide me money… every single time..

Aww… ❤️

You all know my dad, cool dude, man of few words, and doesn’t show much emotion…

Yesterday before visiting I stopped by during my lunch to talk to him, and he was so choked up…

And this morning when my parents called- they were both crying.. and in all of my life this is one of very few moments I’ve witnessed him in this state.. I can truly see and feel how much he loves her..

He was saying “we need to make sure we order flowers… she loves flowers…can you look now?” But we were telling him we have to wait for arrangements to know where to have them delivered..

Dad is not the one to initiate or be proactive about getting things done, but for auntie, I can see how pure the love is..

Sending extra love, mng Ralph, Gina, & Rachel. Your mom definitely made an impact on those closest to her. All of the stories my dad has told me… has made it
so transparent on why auntie was his favorite.

Rest in Paradise Auntie

Dear Salumbides Family,

It is with great sorrow that I send my condolences. Aida was my PM shift charge nurse at CCRMC in the 90's. I remember her smile like it was yesterday. She was an elegant lady, always well dressed and soft spoken. I am grateful for the time I had with her. I enjoyed working with her. God bless you Aida...rest in peace.

Thank you family for allowing me the opportunity to share my memories.

Our dear Auntie Aida was our Mom's best friend while we were in Guam.  They had a special bond between the families. My sister Marilou was her favorite, whom she spoiled before the kids came along. Unfortunately when our family decided to return to the Philippines they communicated via letters for many years. Due to the strong relationship with the Salumbides they sent monetary support to my family when we needed it.  We will never forget their generosity and the kindness they showed to our family.  I was fortunate to have the opportunity to care for Auntie during my stay in  2008. Those were priceless memories that I had with Auntie, especially having to introducing myself everyday, who I am and how am I related to her.  The photos I posted were from 2016 when my husband and I visited the Bay area. May you rest in peace Auntie Aida. You'll always be in my heart. From the Tadeos, Cohens and Moodys family, we love you.
