Alan's Life

September 30, 2012

Alan was the youngest son of Stuart & Alice Blyth of Koumala.  He had one brother James Blyth.  He also had several Sister-in Laws and Brother-in-Laws Janice Blyth Kevin & Deidrie Stevens Lyn and Stewart Grant and Del & Peter Hyland.  Like any child Alan had a normal childhood and went to Koumala State School and then onto Sarina State High School.  Alan travelled to Sarina State High School by rail motor and from the stories that have been told Alan got up to quite a few antics on the rail motor – like the time he locked the guard in the guard van.  Of course Alan denied it was him that did it.  Maybe this is where his children inherited “It wasn’t me” from.  After leaving school Alan joined his parents in working at Koumala Motors. Even when he was so sick he still managed to get to work each day to try and help out.  In the early days he would work long hours delivering fertiliser to many farms as far as Carmila.  Alan would often take Gail and Jason in the truck after the bus run just so he could spend some time with his dad.  With the introduction of one tonne bags Alan’s job became easier and he could spend more time with his family.  Alan took over driving the school bus when his father passed away and continued to drive the bus until June this year when ill health took over.  Many of the children who are now adults can remember the bus trips to school with enjoyment.  While waiting for connecting buses it wasn’t unusual for Alan to play cards with the children.  Alan even had one high school student leave his smokes in the bus while at school.  Still not sure to this day if this boy’s mum and dad knew he smoked.  Alan was now taking second generation children to school and parents new their children were safe with Alan taking their children to school as he was a very careful driver and never once had an accident.  This is a great record when you think Alan drove his school bus for over 30 years.  When Alan passed away Gail received a message from a past student saying that Alan was loved by many people and he made that trip to school just that little bit more enjoyable. It just goes to show how many lives he has touched over the years driving the bus and how the children loved him.   During his teenage years he would spend a lot of time with Serg and his other mates going to footy cabarets and his favourite haunt was the harbour.  This is how Alan met Gail through mutual friends when Alan was 18.  Gail did not quite know what to think of Alan when she first met him.  He had long hair and white pants.  But Alan and Gail fell in love and married on the 31 July 1976.  Alan was a wonderful husband to Gail and never once in their married life did Alan stop Gail Jason or Krystal from doing anything.  He was a husband Gail could boast about as there were not many husbands who cooked ironed and helped out inside the house even to changing the sheets every Friday morning.  During their early married life Alan and Gail spent lots of time visiting and hanging out with Gayle and Henry Ewart.

After marrying Gail they lived in Sarina for 18 months than onto Koumala.  Gail can remember Alan coming home on his motor bike to Sarina in winter and saying he had to stop half way and get down beside the muffler to warm up as it was so cold.

Alan and Gail went on to have two lovely children Jason and Krystal.  Better known to family and friends as Grub and Shithead.  The nicknames were a term of endearment strange as it may sound. Alan was very much a family man.  He loved nothing better than spending time with Gail and his children watching them grow throughout the years.  As the children became older they became his best mates.  Alan liked nothing better than watching the children play sport or dance.  Mind you come dance concert time he hated the ballet and Gail can remembered Alan and Grub complaining bitterly every time a ballet dance came on.  He watched Grub play AFL and soccer for many years and tried not to miss a game.  Grub had a bit of a hot head on the sporting fields and his dad was always shaking his head thinking why he doesn’t he just shut his mouth.  He never missed a grand final and was so proud seeing his son play.

On 30 August 2008 Alan was blessed with a beautiful little Granddaughter Tiarney.  Tiarney was Poppy’s pride and joy and he liked nothing better than spending time with her.  When Alan lost his hair from radiation Tiarney came up to him one Saturday night and rubbed poppy’s head and asked him “Poppy did it hurt when they cut all your hair off”. Poppy loved this little girl so much and she adored her poppy.  When he was diagnosed with cancer he said to Gail all he wanted to do was see Tiarney grow up but this was never to be.

Alan’s favourite pastime besides his family was playing Golf.  He played every Sunday and if it rained on Sunday it was such a tragedy. Every set of new golf clubs he bought he would tell Gail this is the last set.   Gail always asked Alan how his Golf went when he came home on Sunday and if he said Shit she soon learnt not to pursue the matter.

Alan was a strong man and down to earth person.  What you saw is what you got.  He often would tell Gail how he asked people different questions to which Gail would reply “You didn’t ask them that to which Alan would reply “Well if you want to know something ya just ask”. To say how strong Alan was is an understatement. His family have never seen or known anyone to be stronger than he was.  Right till the time of his passing he denied he was in any pain.

Alan will be missed dearly by everyone whose lives he touched but one thing is for sure this wonderful person will never be forgotten he will live on in everyone’s heart forever.

Rest in Peace my soul mate Gail.
