This memorial website was created in memory of our grandparents, Albert Anton and Mary (Cerny) Zaruba and the family they created in a new world.  Albert and Mary were the parents of ten (10) children, Augusta Mary Hill, Rosalia Vaughn, Louis Joseph, Mary "Sue" Provorse Thrun, Edward, Albert,  Josephine Scarlett, Joseph A., Thomas, and Robert.

Albert Anton Zaruba was born in 1862 or 1863 in Julienhain, Bohemia, Austrian Empire. This is now part of the village of Hranicich, Suchdol, in Bohemia. Bohemia is a political division in the western part of the Czech Republic. Albert was the son of Jacob Zaruba and Rosa Sazama.  He and three brothers, Joseph, Michael and Martin immigrated to the United States in the l880's.

Albert married Mary Cerny, daughter of Joseph and Josephine (Bujanovsky) Cerny, on February 14, 1900, in Brainard, Butler County, Nebraska. Mary was born on January 27, 1877, in Visnov, Bohemia, the Kingdom of Moravia, then a part of the Austrian-Hungarian Empire.  She came to the United States in 1885, with her parents, when she was eight years old.

Albert and Mary were the parents of ten children, all living to adulthood and marrying. They made their home on a farm near Brainard until about 1918, when they moved to another farm in Boone County, Nebraska.  Albert was a farmer all his adult life and was killed in a farm accident on his farm near Pinnacle Hill Church, Plum Creek Township, Boone County, Nebraska on June 3, 1923. At the time of his death he was 61 years old according to Mary who said she did not know his exact birthdate.

Mary was 46 years of age at the time of Albert's death. Nine of their ten children were still living on the farm, their ages ranging from second oldest child Rose Zaruba, who was 22 ½ years old, to the  youngest, Robert Zaruba, who was 5 years old at the time of their father's death.  Augusta, their oldest child, was married at the time and living in Denver, Colorado. Mary continued living on the farm until all her children reached adulthood. In 1942, she moved to Fullerton, Nebraska, and made her home there until about 1961, when she entered a rest home in Genoa, Nance County, Nebraska.  She lived there until her death on August 21, 1964; at the age of 87 years. Albert and Mary are both buried in St. Anthony's Catholic Cemetery in Cedar Rapids, Nebraska.

Bob had never seen a picture of his Grandfather Z. When Nancy sent us a text with his picture, I showed it to my daughter and our grandson came in at the same time and he said "PaPa (that's what they call Bob) you have a funny had on. We all realized that Bob does look a lot like the Grandfather he never knew.
