Fish House Punch

December 15, 2021
Dad and Jane always hosted a Christmas cocktail party. It was more of an open house really, with neighbors and friends coming and going over the course of several hours. Dad enjoyed a good cocktail party as much as, and perhaps a bit more than, the next man, but what he enjoyed even more was the preparation of the Christmas cocktail party’s signature drink: the infamous “Fish House Punch.” The main ingredients: three types of rum, brown sugar, and lemon juice. Powerful stuff. Dad loved to explain that the recipe dated from colonial times.
One Christmas, the party its usual success, the last of the guests gone, Dad, holding a cup containing the last of the punch, sat on a cushion next to the Christmas tree and told semi-coherent stories of his Christmases overseas as a Marine. I had never seen him so relaxed and happy.
These days, when it comes time for a Holiday toast, I always try to include a toast “to those, who in service to their country, are separated from family and friends on this holiday.” I must have gotten that one from Dad

Christmas Tree

December 17, 2020
As you all know...Dad could get easily frustrated!  One Christmas when we were home from college he got so frustrated trying to balance the Christmas tree - he nailed the stand to the floor!!! That took care of it

Snow has been falling all day today.  I’m remembering Mom and Al’s Dec 24th magic wedding night when Bing Crosby woke them up a little after midnight to sing White Christmas to them over the phone. Who gets THAT wedding present!
Rest In Peace AWS ❄️

Dad’s Magnificent Send-off

July 14, 2019

July 10, 2019

What a special day!  Dad was interred at Arlington National Cemetery with dignity, respect and grace - as he desired. He would have been so proud of this day —-I was honored to be there with brother Tom & sister Sally for this extraordinary event.  Others attending included granddaughter Jennie, dear friends Marianne & Jeff Salmon; nephew (and name sake) Albert Snell (and his loving and generous wife Mary), and step-grandchildren Aaron & Sherry. His brother Thomas Snell (and sister-in-law Louise) was there in spirit.

A Favorite Jazz Recording

February 20, 2019
Smithsonian Collection of Classic Jazz, Vol. 1 (1 of 5) - West End Blues

From his youth Dad was a fan of what is now called "early jazz." He was especially fond of the opening of "West End Blues" by Louis Armstrong and his Hot Five. Dad especially admired Armstrong's 15-second trumpet intro.

Some Favorite Lines of Verse

February 20, 2019

In his later years, Dad liked to recall the final lines of Alfred Lord Tennyson's poem "Ulysses":

Though much is taken, much abides; and though
We are not now that strength which in old days
Moved earth and heaven, that which we are, we are,
One equal temper of heroic hearts,
Made weak by time and fate, but strong in will
To strive, to seek, to find, and not to yield.

In his own words...

Dad only attended Carleton College for one year before enlisting in the USMC. He wrote this one-page summary of his life in the 50 years that followed.
