The years come and go so fast, taking with them many memories. Still, over time. the memory and affection we had for some of those never fades. Their caring for others, kind and uplifting temperment, their smile and spirit remain with us. Such was the character of 'Detta, and she is subsequently one of those who will always be with us. R.I.P. 'Detta.

I'm not good at remembering birthdays, so thanks to keepers of this site. I am, however, better than average at remembering special people. Their absence is felt as a fond memory that comes from time-to-time, and never permanently leaves. Such is the case with Detta. Her smile; laugh and joyful spirit are enduring. She had a very uplifting spirit, and there are times when that is very helpful to remember. There is no time when I am near relatives that I do not remember her, and that will be lasting. It is in that sense that she will never be gone, but always near when most needed. Donn D.

When anyone is as special as Detta was, we never forget them. We miss seeing and interacting with them, but their spirit is ever present. At any given time, one thing or another will remind us of that person. Detta was that kind of person, one with a spirit that endures. Detta, we feel your spirit, and that means that you will always be with us. Donn D.

I never forget the smile, cheerful demeanor and lightheartedness that "detta" brought to any gathering. Whatever the occassion, she affected change that was uplifting. She will be missed in any gathering of friends and relatives who knew her and loved her spirit.

In time we all become memories, some, however, are ever lasting. Detta was one of those.

Time has not affected the sweet and special memories that I have of "Detta," only made them more special. Her smile and laughter were endearing, and left you knowing that she was a friend. A spirit like hers is ever enduring and will never be forgotten. Donn Davis

Alfredetta and I hung out with each other and had a very tight friendship in elementary, junior high & so on. We stayed across the streets from each other on 8th & West Street, Oakland, CA. We visited each other's house & played together often. I haven't seen or talked to Alfredetta for some time. I miss her. My blessing goes out to the family. Shirley Marshall

Barbarette, I just want to say how blessed your sister, Alfedetta, was to have had you as her loving sister. Thank you for sharing her with us. My prayers are for you, your family, and her family. According to the Word, "to be absent from the body, is to be present with the Lord." What a place to land! My prayers are for you, in this time of great loss. I love you, and I will do my part to keep you, Melvin and your loving family lifted up in this time of sorrow.

Alfredetta will always be remembered by Delores and me as the sister of Barbarette Newton and a vivacious and energetic member of the Payton family. She was creative and supportive of family activities, always pleasant. friendly, and easily met. I do not ever remember seeing her angry or showing an attitude of unpleasantness. Her death was a shock to Delores and me,so unexpected. Although she had been away from the family for a while, She will surely be missed by all who knew her.

Detta lived directly behind us on 62nd Street, Berkeley, she was like a big sister even though she wasn't much older than me. With my father being a minister and being so strict on us we were sooo happy to have Detta living in the back. We could escape to her house hang out there and have fun. I can remember her teaching me how to slow dance using a broom. Detta will never be forgotten. Love, Sherri Hunter-Wilhite

Like a Parent to My Son

December 9, 2013

For a summer of his life that he will surely never forget, Paul and "Detta" kept my son on their farm and opened his eyes and senses to the intricacies of a life that he would never otherwise have known. They treated him as loving parents, and neither he nor I will ever forgot it. The work and life lessons that he learned there are now a permanent part of his life, as is both of our thanks.

A Flower of a Person

December 9, 2013

I am unable to remember seeing or interacting with Alfredetta at any time over the years when she was not blossoming with cheer and an infectious happiness. Her smile and exuberance lifted everyone around her. Whatever your mood, you knew it was going to be lightened and made joyful once you came in contact with her. Her spirit reminds me of a flower in blossom; springing with hope and optimism. None of us are always happy, but it certainly appeared to be the case with her, especially with those of us who saw her infrequently. If you were aware or expected to see her, you looked forward to it, as you knew that you were going to end up smiling and laughing. I am equally reminded of her strength and courage as a person. She did not shy away from challenges, and the instances in her life are many when she took on challenges that others may have shied away from. A truly great and inspiring spirit. I regard it a blessing to have known her, and saying she will be missed by many is a huge understatement. RIP, Dear Friend.
