Her Life
May 27, 2013

Alice Davidson, affectionately known as “Granny,” was born in West Point, Georgia to Alfonsa and Julia Davidson in 1904. At the time of her passing, she was the only surviving sibling of ten children.

Over her 109 years of life, Alice was a great-great grandmother, great-grandmother, grandmother and mother – the root of five living generations at the time of her death. She was married to William Canady for a short while and gave birth to her only daughter, Francenia Davidson.

Alice was baptized early in life and was a faithful member of Bethlehem Baptist Church.  She temporarily lived in Cleveland in the fifties and sixties, assisting her daughter and son in-law with raising their six children. She moved back to West Point and lived there well into her nineties before permanently relocating to Cleveland, as her health began to decline.  In her lifetime, Alice witnessed the Great Depression and the Great Recession; the Jim Crow South and the Civil Rights Movement; and nineteen American presidents -- including the first African American president, Barak Obama.

Alice was a teacher in the rural South for many years; she would work during the weekdays -- several hours away from her home, only returning on the weekends. She was a talented pianist and faithfully served as the church musician, Sunday School teacher; and Church secretary for countless years at Bethlehem Baptist Church. While in Cleveland, she worked as a Teacher’s Aide and played the piano for Beulah Baptist Church. In her spare time, Alice loved to work in her garden; played in a jazz band with her siblings; was a member of the Davidson-Ward Singers; a beautician for family and friends; and was an outstanding seamstress.  She was also an Eastern Star.

Alice had numerous home remedies for whatever scratch, virus or burn that might be troubling you; they ranged from spider webs and ashes to Spirit of Turpentine and her favorite standby, Vicks Vapor Rub. Not only did she rub it on your nose, neck and chest -- she also made you eat it!

Although Alice was packaged in a small frame, she was a mighty woman.   You could often find her fussing, fists balled in a knot and waving her cane.  She yearned for a good reason to say, “Now, go get me a switch!”

One of Alice’s greatest gifts to her family and the community was instilling a love for God in everyone she touched.

Alice leaves to cherish her memory: her daughter, Francenia Davidson (Tom, deceased); Grandchildren: Amir Abdulkareem, Angela Lawson (Paul), Alicia Green (Gerald), Nadine An-Noor, Kevin Davidson (Youlanda), and Cortlin Davidson (Wanda). She has a host of great-grandchildren and other relatives and friends.
