Alta was one of the first people I met when we first moved to Kenton. She showed how easy it was to get involved in the neighborhood activities. She started the Penninsula Garden Club, The Kenton Rose garden and was on the committee to choose the artwork on the light rail line (yellow line). She was just so likable. My husband remembers her depth of history of Kenton when working on a committee together. Her smile was memorable.

A little late, but I have just found out about the passing of Alta. i am so sad to hear about this, but am happy that she is at peace and able to paint, garden and be with all of her favorite people and animals in heaven! I am so grateful for my time spent with Alta at the Assisted Living facility that she lived at and I worked at for over a year. Alta and I were always so happy to see each other and loved to laugh at the fact that she never actually knew my name. All we needed though was to see each others faces and know that we were in the presence of a friend. Shortly before I moved on to another job, one of the events they had in the activity room was a paint and sip class. Alta made her way in there because of her love of painting. Towards the end, she asked for my help and I finished a small corner and initialed it for her. Coincidentally we have the same initials which she noticed by reading my name tag. She asked me to keep it as a memory of her, and it still hangs in my room. It's a lovely sunset with a dragonfly flying low, right above a field of grass. I think about Alta often, and have always hoped that she is happy and being well taken care of. Usually this means that someone was there to help her fill her coffee mugs and get her creamers--three creamers per mug! Again, I am sad that she has passed, but am happy and honored to have known her and been able to smile with her.

Many years ago there was a gang of people whom I met when I began dating my husband. It was centered on the Twilight Room. There are very few left. Alta was such a presence in the group. When my eldest was born she became a wonderful caregiver and guide to a first time mother with no other family in the area. We grew apart but I will never forget her.

Alta was a cheerful and beautiful soul who painted the world of nature through hands. She painted beautiful images with acrylics and also created beautiful gardens in her yard. I remember taking her to the Fall Festival in Corvallis, and while I know she was exhausted after our day of "booth shopping" she never let on. May Maureen, Mary, Mike and George know she was adored by many. She will be remembered forever.

Thank you for allowing me to take care of Alta at WSMC! ❤️ Her love for her cat and tentative care of him will forever be with me. I never let him out the door unless she told me he wanted to go for a ‘hallway walk’! In my prayers always ❤️

I am so glad I have Both of the Books Alta got published. Many wonderful interviews she did, with the elders in the community, so we always have those stories.  The time I spent with Alta on Kenton PTA, was always rewarding.  Her beautiful garden, on that corner , just wasnt enough. She wanted to do something with that Triangle on Interstate, to make it more attractive, now we have the Rose Garden, maintained by Kenton Volunteers. Bless you Alta, for all of your quiet dedication.

I just learned of Alta's death and am so sorry. She was wonderful and funny, and I loved her very much.
I've already been missing her as a neighbor for the last few years. She got a kick out of my animals, especially my dog Bear and my cat Dalgliesh; both used to wander into her house and make themselves comfortable (which for Dalgliesh meant helping himself to Bruno's food)! Bruno, that wondrous cat, did okay with that.
I have one of her paintings in my office, and it is a lovely reminder of her and her many interests. (She was amazed when I couldn't arrange a bouquet of flowers in a vase!).

Many years ago Alta and George shared their Portland home with me, getting me to the bus the next morning so that I could start the Seattle to Portland bike ride. After the ride, they picked me up and got me on my way. I never forgot their generosity and kindness and their beautiful garden.

Liebe Maureen
Sincerly
Ben

Her Life

Alta Elaine Mitchoff

December 10, 2018

Alta Elaine Mitchoff was born on May 16, 1932 in Portland, Oregon to Donald and Susan (Unger) McPherson.  She attended grade school at Peninsula Elementary and graduated from Roosevelt High School in 1950.  Alta passed away peacefully on November 30, 2018 in Corvallis with her two daughters by her side.

Alta married George Mitchoff on September 27, 1958.  Alta and George began their family life in the Kenton District of North Portland, where they lived on Terry Street.  For many years, Alta worked as book keeper for Sam’s Texaco and Towing.  Later she applied her skills at Pendleton Woolen Mills.  Alta and George moved to Corvallis in 2006 to be closer to family.

Alta was devoted to her community as an activist, gardener, and volunteer.  Her community-giving included being a long-standing PTA member of Kenton Elementary, Sunday school teacher at Queen of Peace Catholic Church, was a long-time member of the Kenton Neighborhood Association working on neighborhood clean ups, beautification projects, Historic Kenton Firehouse Committee, Master Gardener of Multnomah and Benton counties, historical author, Peninsula Garden Club member, and a decade-long volunteer with the Portland Marathon.  Alta will be remembered by most for her love of gardening that also benefited the greater community.  In 1994, Alta received a Spirit of Portland Award as Volunteer of the Year for her work establishing and maintaining the Kenton Neighborhood Rose Garden on Interstate Avenue. “Alta was an exemplary volunteer – deeply and seemingly tireless in her commitment to Kenton.”

Growing up and living in North Portland, Alta wrote a book titled The History of the Kenton Neighborhood to help designate Kenton as a historic district.  Between paid work, volunteering, and raising three children, Alta made time to learn to oil paint and become a skilled artist over the years.  Many of her beautiful paintings hang on the walls of family, friends, and businesses.  When asked why she took on painting she replied, “It helps keep me sane.”

Alta is survived by her husband of 60 years, George; son Michael Mitchoff of Seattle; daughters Mary Van Orden of Eugene and Maureen Puettmann (Klaus) of Corvallis; sister Millie Reakseker (St. Helens); and brother John (Barbara) Matheson of Winlock.  She was blessed with three grandchildren Paul Puettmann (Bozeman), Peter Puettmann (Monmouth), and Celia Mitchoff-Lugo (Seattle).

There was a wonderful article about Mom in the St. Johns Review 8/11/20016 vol. 103 Issue 16.  I have added the article to the "Gallery". The title of the article sums Mom's connection with North Portland.  "Good help is hard to find...That's why North Portland is going to miss Alta Mitchoff".
