Obituary-Alvin Helge

Alvin N. Helge passed away during the morning of November 23, 2015 while residing for a short stay in the Ambler Extended Care facility located in Ambler, Pennsylvania. He was born (December 15, 1924) and raised in the central Texas area, but had been living in Pennsylvania for the recent few years of his life with his youngest son, Jon Paul Helge, and the son's wife, Sheila Helge. Alvin N. Helge is the son of the late Simon and Martha Helge who were both born in the Scandinavian countries. He was preceded in death by his wife Lillie May Helge (2008) whom he was married to for 60 plus years. Alvin and Lillie raised six children who are still living: Terry Helge (wife Kathy), Lynette Lewis (husband Glen), Alvin N. Helge Jr., Richard Helge (wife Peg), Pam Helge, and Jon Paul Helge (wife Sheila). He has been the loving grandfather/great grandfather/great great grandfather of 21 grandchildren, 19 great grandchildren, and 2 great great grandchildren. He is also survived by his sister-in-law Darpha Helge.
Alvin N. Helge had a notable military service record by serving in the Navy from September 12, 1941 until February 14, 1964 having become one of the first ever "Radar Man" and reached the level of Senior Chief Petty Officer before retiring. After serving those many years with active duty, he also served in the Naval Reserve for 10 years and was a member of the Fleet Reserve Association.
Alvin N. Helge did enjoy tending a garden, reading the Bible, playing dominoes, dressing up as Santa Claus (once a year), and spending time with his family. He was a long term member of Ridgetop Baptist Church, Austin, Texas and served many roles while there.
Memorial services for Alvin N. Helge will be held at Ridgetop Baptist Church on Saturday December 19, 2015 at 4:00PM.   Published in Austin American-Statesman from Dec. 16 to Dec. 17, 2015
