Prof. Amby Odiari was one time Head of the Department of Computer Science, Federal University of Technology, Owerri (FUTO). He established very cordial and healthy working ethos and relationships with his colleagues, staff and students. He was an ever willing teacher ready to impart knowledge to students and his colleagues at any time you approach him. He remained unassuming, calculated and wonderfully a humorous person.
The Department made impressive impact outside the University as students from the Department took park in inter-University Competitions and won laurels. We shall miss his jokes and reminiscences of what life is outside Nigeria especially in the UK where he lived and studied.
Prof., we enjoyed your presence at the Department since 2002. You were calm, loving and hardworking. You maintained a good relationship with both staff and students. We shall remember you fondly by the footprints you left in teaching, learning and Research in Computer and related disciplines.
Adieu Prof.

One of the greatest men that ever lived

Sir,

It wasn't too long after you started supervising my project that we became friends, If not for your support, love, and care, I wouldn't have completed the project in time.

Quite amazing how you went as far as welcoming me into your home just so that I could meet up with the deadline. This remains the kindest gesture I had ever received from all my teachers, I'll always appreciate this.

You always treated me like a son, had the best for me at heart, an unrelenting commitment to helping me become a success, even when you were critically Ill, you were still interested in making life better for me.

Such selflessness hard to come by, an angel in a man. I never had a school father until I met you, I thank God for making our paths cross, In a short while I had learned so much from you, my only regret is that our journey together was short. You have made a mark in my heart that can't be erased

You will always hold a special place in my heart.

Rest in peace Sir

Your son

Daddy the great academician

August 2, 2019
An Iroko journeys on - Daddy you will be greatly missed. Its taken me a while to come to terms that you are no longer here with us. I've  been in denial,  pretending that you'll soon wake up. Despite all my efforts to keep you here on earth, God thought it's best you come to him to rest. I am thankful to God that you lived a fulfilled life. 80 years plus!!! Not many can boast of that these days.
What I'll remember most is your zest for education. You believed that until one graduated with a PhD that person wasn't educated enough . You used to say "study hard", if not you'll end up as a shoe shiner or orange seller. The thought of hawking oranges on the street was unimaginable.  So  I studied hard. I could go on to narrate but I'll end up writing a book. That reminds me, I did promise to write a book about the ODIARI'S, this may be the write time.

As we prepare to lay you to rest, may your gentle soul rest in peace  Adieu daddy!!!!

GONE BUT NEVER FORGOTTEN

July 18, 2019
God Be With You Till We Meet Again

How my heart saddened each moment I realized that you were no more is beyond human comprehension. But I know HEROES live forever, ergo, you will forever live in my heart. No wonder you chose to leave us on that special day, (30th May) the departed heroes were honored, and the church celebrated Christ Ascension. Indeed you were a great man, so respected and admired by many. A rare gem is no more, an emiratus professor is gone! Your sound academic knowledge is beyond comparison, a large vacuum has been created that cannot be filled, a hole has been dug that can't be covered, a wound has been opened that can hardly heal, the Iroko tree has fallen! He was a father, mentor, an educationist...

As his student, he usually told us (his students) about his Manchester story, that was why he was popularly referred to as the Manchester man; again he would always tell us 'you guys problem is...ENGLISH! You don't understand English,' (and the class will be filled with laughter). Hmmm, what a father, he taught me how to respect people and be fearless; if I should complain how tough a situation is with me, Doc will always tell me 'just hang in there, do your best and leave the rest to God' each time I remembered your encouraging words,  my strength doubled and I will boldly face that situation. What I have become today, I owe to you. You were more than a father. Wished you would have lived longer than this, but I believe God knows the best because you fought to stay with us, even when your ill-health was weighing you down. I could recall a day I was so sobered and said I don't know what else to do, so that you could be strong again. You looked at me and said 'Onyii, you have done more than enough.' I know, no amount of tears will bring you back, else I would have done that. Because I remembered vividly a particular day I saw how down you were, I couldn't hold my tears and you told me to stop crying that it will worsen your situation and I had to hold myself and buried everything deep inside me. You were a special man to many and for me words alone cannot describe your exceptional qualities. You will be greatly missed by many. May the Lord grant you eternal rest in His bosom and let the perpetual light shine upon you (Amen). We shall meet on the resurrection morning when and where there will be no more sickness and pain.
Adieu Doc!
