LIFE REFLECTIONS(Obituary)

February 3, 2013

Saturday, October 13, 2012 will forever be remembered. It was the memorable day that, Maame Amma Akyema Nyame, while in her residence in Accra, Ghana, quietly entered into eternal peace. She was the third of twelve children born to Madam Abena Dufie Afrakomah and Opayin Kofi Attah Kumi of Nkwatia-Kwahu, Ghana.  She was 85 years old.

At an early age, she moved to Koforidua, Ghana to live with her Aunt and spent most of her adolescent years there.  She subsequently moved back to Nkwatia; met and eventually married her husband, the late Mr. Kwame Amoako.

The new couple relocated to “Kwahu” in the Brong Ahafo region of Ghana, a village they founded in 1952 with other settlers. Together with her husband, they cultivated a large cocoa farm.  In 1958, desperate to provide care for her aging mother and to place her two sons in a more conducive environment to facilitate their formal education, she moved back to Nkwatia.  She eventually had eight children, five boys and three girls.

In Nkwatia, she started the very successful “Amma Nyame Store” which is still in operation and being run by her daughter Janet Dufie Amoako today.  In addition to running the store, she farmed on family lands and traded on “market days” in communities around the Afram plains in Ghana.

Amma was a very kind and gentle person.  She had a loving and generous heart and always gave to others even when she had little for herself and children.  She believed that, volunteerism added to life’s meaning.  She always talked with joy about her volunteer work during the initial construction of St Peter’s Secondary School at Nkwatia-Kwahu.  As a member of the “Women’s Class” of Nkwatia Presbytarian Church, she was deeply involved in community volunteerism; including visits to needy families.

It is also interesting to note that, she attended the inaugural service of the Pentecost International Worship Center of Tempe, Arizona which occurred at Pastor Hayford’s residence in Scottsdale, Arizona.

Amma thoroughly enjoyed raising her eight children, her little sister when her mother passed away, and over the years other children besides her own.  She was preceded by her two sons Mr. Kwadwo Boateng and Mr. Isaac Baafi Amoako.  She spent most of her later years visiting her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren in the United States of America.  She leaves her loving memories to be cherished by her remaining children, grandchildren, great grandchildren, loving extended family and many, many friends and acquaintances.

Amma always wore a pleasant smile on her face and exuded a great sense of humor to match. She brightened up any situation, even in very difficult circumstances. She left this world a better place than she found it. Let us celebrate her life with joy and enthusiasm.  May She Rest in Peace!   “Odupong Kese Atutu” !! (Big tree has fallen)  “Damrifa Due Amma”!!!  “Damrifa Due Due”!!!!
