Her Life

Mamie, at a glance

July 1, 2012

Mrs. Amy M. McIntosh, (nee Stone), fondly known as Mamie, of 29 West Sidney Avenue, Mt. Vernon, NY,  was born to the late Ethel Williams Stone and Bertram Stone in Montego Bay, Jamaica on August 28th, 1934. She was the second of three children and the first daughter of this union. Her brother Allan was the first to have departed from this world.

Amy was born and raised throughout her life as a Christian and a child of God in the First Presbyterian Church in her hometown of Montego Bay. She worshipped at the First Assembly of God church in her early years in New Rochelle and later accepted Jesus Chris as her Lord and Savior and worshipped at Bible Way Church under the pastorate of Bishop Odell Lyerly. She was educated at Barracks School and worked in the hotel industry for many years. After migrating to the United States in the late 1960's she became a Certified Nurse's Assistant. She made certain that her children completed high school in Jamaica before their migration to the United States. They were the enduring source of her joy and happiness and she was the abiding source of love, discipline, grace and encouragement to her grandchildre and her great grandchildren.

Just being in Mamie's presence was a special treat. She made the best scrambled eggs and had a terrific chicken recipe and would almost always burn her rice but redeemed herself with scrumptuous escovietched fish. Mamie was the daughter and wife of a fisherman yet she did not know how to swim. She did however successfully teach all her children at a young age how to swim. This fine lady did not have a formal college education but insisted on her children and following generations going to college and graduating. Additionally, Mamie was the only parent that was known to have had two of her children serve as presidents of their alumni association under the Union of Jamaican Association, New York. Like  her father and sister, she loved to travel and went on tours, cruises, and bus rides and encouraged her children to do the same. Mamie was transformed from earth to eternity on May 31st, 2012 after a brief illness in the Mt. Vernon Hospital.

Mrs. McIntosh is survived by her siblings Gloria Stone (Canada) and Millicent Stone  Lewis (  England), her six children, Lorraine Hawthorne, Leaonard Hawthorne, Jennfer P. Lumley, Maxine Lyerly, Joseph McIntosh and Eloine McIntosh as well as nineteen grandchildren: Shelley, Miguel, Omar, Rene, Jason, Pat, Jessica, Thomas, Corey, LaMarjay, Maitrez, Janiah, Sidney, Dominique, Danielle, DJ, Travis, Justin and Jordan. She also leaves twelve (12) great grandchildren, nieces, nephews, cousins, in-laws, many other children that she raised and a host of friends and family members from all over the world.
