I've said good-bye to Andy four times now at the various ceremonies. It doesn't really help. He's still gone. This man had a very positive influence on those around him, and that's over. No glossing over the loss. I miss him. Just wanted to be selfish and say that again.

I appreciate Andy's love for life, music, the ocean, his clients and those he cared for. He was humble, humorous and always willing to help. A life with many wonderful traits we would be better for having. Thoughts and prayers to his
family and friends that are trying to come to terms with his too soon passing.

As a Farmers agent of many years I had the great pleasure of knowing Eileen, Andy's Mom. Eileen was such a wonderful person I knew Andy's character before meeting Andy; and I was correct!
Once in heaven we will know why, but until then all we can do is appreciate Andy for making this world a better place because he was in it.

Andy, Our thoughts and prayers go out to you and your family. Knowing you in the Huntington Beach Concert Band was always a pleasure and a time of great laughs. It was awesome the day you came back to the band and made the trumpet section sound better from the get go. I will always remember you playing something from the Tijuana Brass as a warm up each week. I will miss you my friend. RIP

This is hard. 40 years was not enough time. I posted a pic from 3 Jul party the last time I saw Andy. Wasn't supposed to be the last time. Andy, Daren, and I went to the beach. I caught a wave and felt great. We walked down the beach. I said it felt like we were teenagers again. Andy was smart, incisive, genuine, talented and too young. God I miss him. Condolences to the family.

Andy, it's 5:00 SOMEWHERE and I know you're there. When Alan Jackson asks what would Jimmy Buffet do, from now on I will shout out "What would ANDY ARNOLD do?" So pour me something tall and strong my friend. There's a hole in my heart you've left me to deal with, so make sure it's DAMN STRONG! You will always live in my heart. RIP

Andy, you were one of my oldest and best friends. More family to me than most of my family. Bright, funny, curious, great debater. All around great guy. And your trumpet playing got pretty darned good! You are already sorely missed. All the best and many blessings to your family during this terrible time. It's a great loss for very many. Farewell, my friend. Love you, man.

Rest in peace, Andy! He has achieved success who has lived well, laughed often and loved much: who has left the world better than he found it; whether by an improved poppy, a perfect poem, or a rescued soul; who has never lacked appreciation of Earth's beauty or failed to express it; who has always looked for the best in others and given the best he had. Whose life was an inspiration. BS

To Andy: I may not have known you for as many years as some, but a love of music is something we shared, even if we didn't always agree on what kind. You were a kind, gentle, and patient person, always willing to give good advice and most importantly, a wonderful friend. You were taken from us too young and I will miss you dearly.

I've known drew for years, best friends at an early age, so Andy saw us grow up and I too was able to see the family transform as the years went by. Andy and I would argue a lot on where the better spot was, he was always for the pier and I was the cliff kid. This is all still too soon, but to go out doing what he loved, there surely can't be much better. RIP Andy, from the family and I

Andy always questioned everything, tested limits and demanded answers. That's what attracted me to him. I would go over his house as a young child and see a little sign in his bedroom that said 'Think'...no other kid that age had a sign like that. Andy was always the driver and the one we congregated around . RIP my FRIEND! You are sorely missed

Surfers are mourning the death of a longtime bodysurfer who died after a neck injury he sustained while surfing waves near Huntington Beach Pier last week.

Andrew Arnold – known for playing his trumpet on the north side parking lot – was pulled out from the water Nov. 4 and was unconscious when lifeguards arrived. He was taken to Hoag Hospital in Newport Beach, where he was pronounced dead on Sunday after his organs were harvested, according to longtime friend Daren Jenner.

Jenner said low tide that afternoon could have caused shallow water, and it is believed that Arnold hit his head on a sand bar when he was “flipping out” of a wave.

Jenner and Arnold, who grew up in Huntington Beach, had just days before spent time bodysurfing the Wedge, Seal Beach, and Arnold’s regular spot, the Huntington Beach Pier.

Jenner, who met Arnold when he was 4, described him as the kind of guy to give you his last dollar.

“He was a gentle giant, a musician, and a lover of life, his family, and his friends,” Jenner wrote in an e-mail. “He cherished the ocean and water; they were his refuge. He always respected ‘Mother Ocean,’ and he was a talented bodysurfer, he rode those big pier bowls with courage and style, using only a small hand board for steering.”

Acting Marine Safety Chief Mike Baumgartner said that Arnold was a regular bodysurfer in the area.

“He is someone who frequents the area all the time; he’s very competent,” Baumgartner said.

Off-duty lifeguards responded to Arnold, Baumgartner said.

Baumgartner said lifeguards respond to about 20 – 25 cervical injuries a year, and that an uneven ocean floor can be dangerous even for the most experienced ocean-user.

“You always have to keep your arms out in front of your head if you’re anywhere near the ocean floor,” he said.

Friend Ryan Turner said Arnold was someone who charged the biggest waves, and the day they found him the conditions were “puny.”

Arnold sold Turner’s family insurance. He took over the Farmer’s Insurance business in Huntington Beach on Main Street from his mother, Eileen, after she died.

“He was a great guy; the easiest guy to talk to,” Turner said.

Surfer Mark Weiss remembers seeing Arnold often in the parking lot before surf sessions.

“He’d just be playing his horn; it was awesome,” he said. “He always had a good vibe. He was a fixture down there, we lost a good guy.”

Jenner is in Phuket, Thailand, volunteering as a lifeguard, where they plan to have a “swim out” for Arnold. Plans for a Huntington memorial are also in the works, though a time and date have not been decided.

Barbie so sorry for what's going on. Myself and our church is praying for peace and comfort for your family. As you know Andy was a close friend who constantly asked me to play my guitar for him. Johnny Denney and I would play music and Andy would try to join us with his trumpet. He would always play the Star Wars theme for me when I entered the parking lot. He always encouraged me about church and how he knew it was good for the community. My heart aches for you and your family. The boys in the parking lot are missing him and seems a part of our family is gone. Please let me know about services and let me know if we can be of any help. The Orange County Register contacted me and asked if they could have permission to run an article about Andy Arnold. Please let me know if you would like that.
