ForeverMissed

Andy Nieto left us on June 29, 2022 at the age of 33, while doing something that he really enjoyed, scuba diving. Andy grew up in Hollywood, Florida and attended the University of Miami where he earned a bachelor's degree in Aerospace Engineering. He then attended Florida International University, where he met the love of his life, Richa Agrawal. After graduating with his master’s degree, Andy went to UC Davis, where he fell in love with California. At UC Davis, he would earn his Doctorate’s degree in Material Science and became a Professor at the Navy Postgraduate School. An explorer at heart, Andy loved traveling and all things outdoors - hiking, snowboarding, scuba diving, kayaking, spending time at the beach and deeply cared about the environment and nature. He was also an avid chess player, starting to come up the ranks and loved playing chess tournaments in the Bay Area.

Andy will be especially remembered by his wife Richa Agrawal, his parents Janeth and Hernando Nieto and his brother Hernando Nieto Jr. and sister-in-law Lindsey Nieto, as a loving husband, son and brother, always with a sense of humor and devotion to his family. Andy will be deeply missed, but his memory and his legacy will live on.

In lieu of flowers, the family has set up a conservation fund with Point Reyes National Seashore, a special place for Andy and one of his favorites to take the family hiking. We kindly request that memorial gifts be made to Point Reyes National Seashore Association (PRNSA). All donations should include the note: “In Memory of Andy Nieto”.

Andy truly loved life and lived it fully with purpose. In fact, he dedicated one of his Thesis to life, stating “I dedicate this Thesis to life itself – for all the joys, adventures, wonders, and mysteries it provides, which have made life so enjoyable and worth living to the fullest.”

I do not know what to say. I am shocked. I have known Andy as a Graduate student, then post doc then a Professor. ..It is tragic and devastating. I just spoke with Andy in June via Zoom. Andy was kind, helpful, happy, and an amazing person. My deepest condolences to the family of Dr. Nieto..

We are so heartbroken for the Nieto family over the tragic loss of their beloved Andy (son, brother, and husband). We know how much Andy means to his family as we witnessed the close bond he and his older brother Hernando shared with one another. Hernando, you and your family are in our thoughts and prayers during this sad and painful time. From all the stories we've heard from you about your brother, we know Andy will be greatly missed. But, he'll always be watching over you, looking out for you, and be by your side in ways that are even more meaningful beyond our understanding. From what we heard about your brother, Andy lived a meaningful life filled with amazing accomplishments, love, adventure, and success and I'm sure he cherished you as his big brother who always supported him along the way. We know you are proud of your brother and his legacy will live on through you, Hernando. Love always, your friends, Jonah and Heather.

To the memory of a peer that put his passion in everything he did. Amazing instructor, dedicated researcher, and very bright Materials Scientist/Engineer. Andy will be missed.

Richa and Andy’s family: There are no words for such an unimaginable loss, you’re in my thoughts and prayers.

Dear Andy,

I was so fortunate when you decided to come work in my research group at UC Davis, to pursue your Ph.D. Not only were you clearly highly intelligent, but you were always so motivated, ambitious, and driven, yet you were happy and excited by your work, especially each and every challenge that came your way.

I always appreciated your independence and your motivation, and enjoyed seeing you learn, grow, and succeed in your career. And all along the way, you helped others to push themselves to also do more and do better, and you excelled in educating young students and making sure they had opportunities to learn. Your leadership within our professional community was highly valued and greatly appreciated.

Beyond your wonderful professional accomplishments and contributions, you relished life. Your smile would spread happiness to all around you. I'm so grateful I had the opportunity to know you, and your smile! I will remember it always.

Thank you for staying in touch over the years, and sharing your news and achievements with me along the way. I am and will always be very proud of you. And I will miss you.

My deepest sympathies to your family.

Julie

Dear Andy,

I'll forever miss you but consider myself lucky to have been your family. I was also amazed by your intelligence, kindness and love of your family. You lit up Nando's, Mom's and Dad's lives, and we will miss you everyday. Your memory and your legacy live on, and we will tell your story.

I can't wait to see you again. It's only a matter of time.

Love,
Lindsey

Andy,

I am not sure I can ever write anything that will do your character justice. You were a bright light that was shooting high. The thing is, your rise was lifting everyone else up along with you. You were the kind of guy who supported others in their careers and lives just as much, and often more so, than you looked out for your own. I am proof of that. I will miss your energy, passion for the field, and most of all our talks. You will be missed Andy, but never forgotten.

Dear Friends and Family,

Thank you for inquiring about how to make a gift in memory of my brother, Andy. This email provides information on how to make a donation to help support the ongoing care, maintenance, and preservation of Point Reyes National Seashore, a place that was very meaningful to him and ultimately was the reason he ended up living in California. We kindly request that memorial gifts be made to Point Reyes National Seashore Association (PRNSA). All donations should include the note: “In Memory of Andy Nieto”.

Point Reyes National Seashore Association (PRNSA) is the nonprofit partner to the national park and they work in partnership with the National Park Service to provide opportunities for all people to experience, enhance, care for and maintain Point Reyes National Seashore for present and future generations. Since their founding in 1964, PRNSA has raised millions of dollars to enhance the visitor experience, preserve cultural resources, and improve wildlife habitat and connect children and adults more deeply to the park and nature.

Thank you for considering making a gift in memory of Andy to support the ongoing care and preservation of this incredible park.
