Angela lost her life on December 14, 2022, after many years of battling complications from a childhood brain tumor and treatments. She was preceded in death by her husband Neal Slayden Charlton. Angela is survived by her parents John and Kimberly Kerper, brother Andrew Kerper (Amy), sister Christina Carter (Colton), and brother Michael; grandparents Duey and Dixie Kerper, Philip and Peggy Selig; in-laws Dorris and Lisa Charlton, and sister-in-law Dr. Katy (Steven) Hines, nieces and nephews John Thomas Kerper, Charlotte Carter, Hannah, Charlie and Lucy Hines; many aunts, uncles and cousins. She also leaves behind her loyal and protective Maltese, Bernie.

Angela was born in Birmingham, Alabama, on April 18, 1988. In 1990, her family moved to Marietta, Georgia, where she attended St. Jude Academy.In 1998, her family moved to Hoover, Alabama. There Angela attended St. Rose Academy, John Carroll Catholic High School and two years at the University of Montevallo.

Angela suffered from Neurofibromatosis 1. When she was 2 1/2, she was diagnosed with an optic nerve glioma which later traveled to her brain stem. After many years of chemotherapy, Angela had to have full cranial radiation when she was nine years old.

Despite all the medical treatment she had to endure to survive, Angela led a full and happy life. When she was 5 years old, she was asked to sing the National Anthem at an Atlanta Braves game. She radiantly and fearlessly sang every word and didn’t miss a beat. Angela loved visiting her extended family, traveling, playing Rummikub, reading and going to the lake. She enjoyed her job at Outback Steakhouse and was a dedicated and diligent employee.

Some of her best memories were her weeks spent at Camp Smile-a-Mile, a camp for children with cancer. It was there that she met the love of her life, Neal Charlton, who also had suffered from a brain tumor. Neal was a true gentleman and Angela's Prince Charming. He made her dream come true when they fell in love and got married.

Angela loved her faith and had a very close relationship with Jesus. She prayed the rosary every night and had a long list of people that she prayed for. Angela had serious health issues throughout her life, but she rarely complained. Her courageous and cheerful attitude was an inspiration to everyone who knew her.

A service celebrating Angela’s life will be held on Monday, December 26, at St. Peter the Apostle Catholic Church in Hoover, Alabama. Visitation 10:00 am; Rosary 11:30 and Funeral Mass 12:00.
