Anne Burwell Bernhardt, 87, a resident of Port Royal Plantation, Hilton Head, SC died Wednesday, August 17, 2011 at Fraser Health Care after a short illness.

A native of Granville County (Oxford) North Carolina, the daughter of the late Joe T. and Annie Lee Burwell.  Anne graduated from Oxford High School and attended Strayer College in Washington, DC.  During World War II, she was accepted to a position with Headquarters, Department of the Navy, Washington, DC.  She holds membership in the Disabled American Veteran’s Auxiliary, the Society of the US Army Finance Corp Officer’s Wives Association and the Oxford Presbyterian Church.  She decided to make Hilton Head Island, SC her home in 1977.

Funeral services will be conducted 11:00 AM Tuesday, August 23, 2011 in the Eakes Funeral Chapel in Oxford, NC.  Burial will be in Elmwood Cemetery.

Surviving are her husband of 61 years, Col. William R. Bernhardt (ret.) of the home, a son David Adams Bernhardt of Hilton Head, SC, three sisters, Margaret B. Saunders, Ruth B. Williamson and Jean B. Morgan, all of Oxford, a brother, Nat Burwell of Burlington, NC and a grandson, David Adams Bernhardt II of Washington, DC.  She was preceded in death by a son, William R. Bernhardt, Jr., a sister Henrietta B. Johnson and three brothers, Joe T. Burwell, John S. Burwell and William L. Burwell.

 

Visitation will be held 7:00 – 8:30 PM Monday, August 22, 2011 at the Eakes Funeral Home in Oxford, NC.
