Obituary

September 17, 2012

Anne Gibson Huddleston, a courageous child of God, was born on February 28, 1928, in Cleburne, Johnson County, Texas, and was released on September 15, 2012, at her home in Granbury, Hood County, Texas.

She was a member of the Thorp Spring Church of Christ where she taught the Women's Bible Class for many years. Her grandparents Rufus Neely and Laura Ann Crawford Moore moved to Thorp Spring in 1908 to reopen the old Add-Ran College, which then became Thorp Spring Christian College.

She attended public schools in Bartlett, Temple, Bonham, and Sherman, where she graduated from high school in 1945. She began her college career at Austin College, received her Bachelor's degree from the University of North Texas, her Master's degree from Sam Houston State, and did additional graduate work at the University of Texas in Austin.

Retired Educator and Licensed Professional Counselor, Anne served 30 years in the Public schools of Texas as classroom teacher, assistant principal and guidance counselor. Most of her years were served in Austin and Splendora School Districts.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Alonzo N. and Lota Moore Gibson of Thorp Spring and Benbrook, and by a nephew Richard Gaines Russell. She is survived by her son Patrick Neale Huddleston and wife Liliane Accad Huddleston of Austin, Texas, and two granddaughters, Alexandra of New York City and Michelle of Austin, her brother Robert G. "Bob" Gibson and wife Betty of Searcy, Arkansas, her sister Carol Gibson Wagner and husband Dr. Grant Hulse Wagner of Wichita Falls, Texas; three cousins, David Andrews of Granbury, Ruth Anne Hopfensperger of Killeen, and T. A. Cox of Morristown, New Jersey, five nieces and nephews, 22 great nieces and nephews, and aunt Bernice Hughey of Hurst, Texas.

She moved to Granbury when she retired in 1991 and immediately became involved in the community. She was a member and past president of the Comanche Peak Chapter of the Daughters of the Republic of Texas and belonged to the Elizabeth Crockett Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution, the Hiram B. Granbury United Daughters of the Confederacy, the Thomas Joslin Chapter of the Colonial Dames XVII Century, and served as president of the Thorp Spring Cemetery Association more than 10 years. She was one of the first members and past president of the Hood County Museum. She belonged to the Hood County Retired School Personnel Association and Delta Kappa Gamma Honorary Association for Women Educators. She was a great supporter of the Opera House and a member of the Millennium Club. She also maintained a membership in the Woman's Wednesday Club, Hood County Historical Preservation Society and the Lake Granbury Area Chamber of Commerce. She was a lifetime member of the National Parent-Teacher Association, the Texas State Teachers' Association, and Phi Delta Kappa Honorary Educational Society. She was awarded the "Jim Calhoun Spirit of Granbury Award" by the Historic Granbury Merchants Association in 2006 for "her long and continuous service to the community and for her love of this wonderful town."

Anne was well known for her portrayals of the lives of famous women in the history of Texas. She developed these programs primarily to present to students in the local schools, but also performed for various civic, historical, and religious groups. Although she portrayed Henrietta King, Harriett Ames Potter, Maria Ervendberg, and Sadie Rylee, she was probably best known for her presentation of local historical figure Juana Cavasos who was an early settler of Hood County. She loved the Hood County students and always felt privileged to present a program to them. She devoted time, talent, and love to this community.

Within the margins of her love for Jesus, her other great love was always family and friends. She also had an enthusiastic love of culture. She appreciated and participated in art, music, history (especially that of Texas), education, fine food, and travel.

We have lost our mother, grandmother, sister, aunt, and friend and look forward to being united again in God's Kingdom. She will be greatly missed.

No flowers please. Memorials should be directed to the Thorp Spring Cemetery Association, c /o David Andrews, 5915 Weatherford Highway, Granbury, TX 76049.

The family wishes to express its deep appreciation to Anne’s dear friend Margaret Martone for her years of faithful and loving care.
