What we she did, she did with passion and dedication

by Hans Lehrach
Stubborn, autonomous and independent, driven by curiosity about all that live has to offer, science and the love of music, she chose her own path through life
Her parents, as doctors, instilled dedication and hard work into her while her grandmother inspired self-confidence. Her upbringing was infused by art and music, to self-determination and independent thought. She made her own path, even when her dream of a career as a conductor was blocked.
She started her ambitious career path as scientist as one of the few women studying chemistry at university, progressing to a Ph.D from Vienna to Gottingen, then to Cambridge (USA), and then a group leader in the EMBL in Heidelberg. Then she applied herself to the Human genome project to unlock the human genome. After that, she went to her beloved in London and dedicated herself to cancer research, which she continued after 1999 as a Professor of Molecular biology and genetics in Salzburg.
Always activate with Body and Mind, curious, searching and forever learning
Annemarie was most happy when she was in the mountains. With her hiking companions, in the sport group, in travel or in the circle of her family, she felt alive. We all loved her humour, her mischievous nature, her ability to challenge us in our discussion and to touch our souls with her piano playing. She nurtured her love of music by regularly attending concerts.
She was a connoisseur and creator of excellent food.
Even in her later years, accompanied by advancing Dementia, she continued to fight for what she believed in, unwilling to surrender despite the suffering she had to endure.
Despite our knowledge that your sudden death was a release for you, we still find it hard to do without you.
We will forever carry you in our hearts.
