Annie Marie Harvell Waugh, earned her angel wings on February 26th after a long battle with Alzheimer’s. Marie was born in Pitt County, but moved to Burlington at an early age where she graduated from Walter Williams High School and attended Kings Business College and Elon College.

Marie moved to Oxford in June 1960 when her husband was assigned to Granville County by the NC Highway Patrol. Marie became an active member of the community. She was a member of the Oxford Junior Woman’ Club, serving in many leadership roles over the years, including president.

Marie served as chair for Granville County March of Dimes campaigns. She was a member of Oxford Presbyterian Church where she served for many years.

She loved cooking; especially sugar cookies. Many children over the years enjoyed decorating and eating her sugar cookies. She would prepare cookies and bring decorating supplies to local school classes during the holidays for the children to decorate.

Marie’s family, friends and pets are what she cherished the most. She enjoyed playing bridge and dabbling in the stock market with the Granville Nuggets. After her retirement from Hancock Properties, she enjoyed spending time at her family’s beach home with her granddaughter and entertaining family and friends.

Marie is survived by her husband of 59 years, James Harold Waugh, son Jay Waugh and his wife Anita, and their children Audrey and Austin, and daughter Catherine Waugh, all of Oxford. Her beloved brother Andy Harvell and his wife Sara, of Melbourne FL: Andy’s sons: John Harvell and his wife Heather of Presque Isle, ME; Jacob Harvell of Melbourne Fl; and their mother Jane Gregus Harvell of Rockville, Ct. Marie adored her brother-in-law Donald F. Waugh and his wife Jean of Clayton, NC and their son Donald Waugh and his wife Ashley of Summerville, SC. Her sister-in-law, Nancy Waugh Blythe and her husband Aaron of Winston-Salem, NC were dear to her heart. Their sons, Kevin Blythe and his wife Kathy of Havre de Grace, MD and Keith Blythe and his wife Laura of Winston-Salem, NC brought joy to Marie’s life. She has many grand-nieces and grand-nephews that she loved dearly as well.

She was preceded in death by her father, A. Frank Harvell, her mother, Annie Lee McLawhorn Harvell, and nephew Adam Harvell.

A memorial celebrating her life will be held Sunday, March 8, 2015 at 3:00 PM at the Eakes Funeral Chapel in Oxford by Rev. Alan Koeneke. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the Eakes Funeral Home in Oxford, NC .

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that contributions be made to Granville Co. Spare, PO Box 1793, Oxford, NC 27565.

She showed much love ,courage ,class , and humor and is quite an example. Marie is part of a family that has given so much in service to us all and you are in my thoughts and prayers. It has been a great privilege to have had you in my life and I wish you comfort.
