Here we highlight aspects of Prof. Ambikanandan Misra's career.
Positions held:Prof. Misra served as the Director of Pharmaceutical Research at SVKM's Narsee Monjee Institute of Management Studies, NMIMS University (from February 2020 to October 2020), Dean, Faculty of Technology & Engineering (August 2011 to December 2015) & Head, Department of Pharmacy (July 2003 to October 2008) at The Maharaja Sayajirao University of Baroda. He was associated with the field of pharmaceutical sciences in industries and academics for more than 40 years. He demonstrated his administrative, academic and research excellence during his journey as a Scientist in industries; Professor, Pharmacy Department; Head, Pharmacy Department and Dean, Faculty of Technology and Engineering.
Professional Experience:
Prof. Misra had a total experience of 40 years (11 years in industry and 29 years in academics). He worked as a Professor in Pharmacy since last 22 years and had vast administrative experience (13 years 6 months) both in academic (9 years 6 months) and industrial setups (4 years). For academic administration experience, he held the posts of Head, Pharmacy Department from 3rd July 2003 to 3rd October 2008 (5 years 3 months) and the Dean, Faculty of Technology and Engineering (FTE) from 23 August 2011 to 4 December 2015 (4 years 3 months) which is the biggest faculty at The Maharaja Sayajirao University of Baroda in terms of number of teaching faculty members and supporting staff (>300 teachers and >250 supporting staff).
While working as Head, Pharmacy Department and Dean, Faculty of Tech. & Engg., he was responsible for making several academic and administrative reforms including introduction of new courses at department level (M.Pharm-Novel Drug Delivery Systems) and faculty level (PG diploma inPackaging Technology and Bioinformatics), All India Council for Technical Education(AICTE) approval of two new B.E. programs (B.E.-Computing in Computing and B.E.-TextileProcessing), M.Sc. in Polymer Processing, shifting two diploma courses (in Textile Chemistryand in Textile technology) to ACPDC.
Apart from these academic contributions, several faculty development funds were brought by him from Gujarat and Central Governments (GoG and GoI, respectively) including 750 lacs one-time non-recurring grant on completion of 125 years ofFTE for retrofitting and infrastructure development, 100 lacs recurring grant for starting the courses under “Centre for Advanced Studies in Design and Reconfigurable Computing”, fund for construction of SC/ST girls’ hostel from AICTE (200 lacs), fund of 10200 lacs for institution of “Siemens Centre of Excellence in Industrial Automation” with support of Siemens, Design Tech Solutions and Government of Gujarat (GoG) on PPP mode, “Centre of Excellence in Polymer Science” with outlay of 1600 lacs in collaboration with Central Institute of Plastic Engineering and Technology, Ahmedabad from Ministry of Industries, GoG, “Centre of Excellence in Industrial Mathematics” and “Technology, Information, Forecasting, Assessment Centre-Centre of Relevance and Excellence” (TIFAC-CORE) in Novel Drug Delivery Systems (400 lacs) from TIFAC-Department of Science and Technology (DST), GoI;University Grants Commission (UGC)-Department Research Scheme (DRS) Phase II under Special Assistance Program (50 lacs) from UGC, GoI; Department of Special Assistance (DSA)-Phase I (98 lacs) from UGC, GoI; Promotion of University Research and Scientific Excellence (PURSE) (900 lacs) from DST, GoI; Interdisciplinary Life Science Programme for AdvancedResearch and Education (ILSPARE) scheme (1350 lacs) from Department of Biotechnology(DBT), GoI. Due to these efforts, the research output of Faculty improved in terms of researchpublications and research funding received from Government bodies and industries.
As industrial administrative experience, he served as Head (Product Specification Lab. & Retains and Market Complaints) and as Asst. Manager (Product Specification Lab. & Retains and Market Complaints, In-Process and Statistical Quality Control), Sarabhai Chemicals for 2 years and as Manager (New Drug Delivery Systems Lab., Food & Cosmetics Product Development), Cadila Research Centre for 2 years. During his administrative career in industries, his job was to supervise scientists and supportive staff of > 100 to plan and propel the work such as to meet the requirements of high productivity while meeting the stipulated timelines. He was instrumental in introducing statistical quality control, initiating the activities on Novel Drug Delivery Systems and construction of a Food Factory.
Academic and Research Experience:
Prof. Misra has an h-index (Hirsch index or Hirsch number) of 46 (Google Scholar) with 8586 citations (Access date: 17th October, 2020).
He had a bright academic record. As a researcher, he left his mark on the global research community through forefront research on clinical needs of current healthcare systems by providing clinically viable drug products while also keeping abreast with the future needs of therapeutics by cutting-edge research on gene delivery and nano biotechnology. Key areas of his research were development of Novel Drug Delivery Systems which include nasal and pulmonary drug delivery systems, gene delivery vectors, protein delivery systems, cancer therapeutics,targeted nanocarriers and transdermal drug delivery systems.
He supervised
47 PhD and about 136 Master students for their respective degrees. He wrote
7 books, 44 book chapters and181 peer reviewed publications in reputed journals. He also filed 29 national and international patents (6) out of which
9 have been granted so far.
Awards and Honours:Prof. Misra was recognized with many prestigious awards and accolades for his work, namely a National award for Thrust Area Program in Technical Education (TAPTEC) research project entitled “Liposomal Dry Powder Inhalation” on a National Technology day from Vice-President of India; Best scientist of the year award by Association of Pharmaceutical Teachers of India (APTI) in 2009, an award conferred for contribution in Pharmacy education from IES group of Bhopal in 2009 and International award for Outstanding Manuscript by American Association of Pharmaceutical Scientists (AAPS) in 2008, Best Reviewers in Pharmaceutical Sciences for Elsevier journals by Elsevier in 2011, Scholar in training award by American Association of Cancer Research conference (AACR) in 2010, Ranbaxy Science Scholar Award from Ranbaxy Science Foundation in 2013 and Shri. N. M. Patel Distinguished Alumnus Award by MSU Pharmacy Alumni Association in 2014 and Illustrious Alumnus Award in 2016.
He was a co-coordinator for six major research projects funded by Government of India, amounting to 300 million rupees. He was the co-coordinator of TIFAC-Centre of Relevance and Excellence (CORE) in NDDS, PURSE, DST, Small Business Innovation Research Initiative (SBIRI) Project by Department of Biotechnology, India (DBT) and Sub coordinator of Interdisciplinary Life Science program of Advance Research and Education (ILSPARE), DBT Program.

Prof. Misra was also an advisor at Pharmaceutical, biotechnology and food and cosmetics industries. He undertook various research projects funded by Government bodies and industries, which include 2 AICTE funded projects (27 lacs), 1 UGC sponsored project (5.2 lacs), 1 DBT sponsored project under Small Business Innovation Research Initiative-SBIRI scheme (311.01 lacs) in collaboration with Jupiter Biosciences, UGC-Basic Science Research (BSR) one-time grant (7 lacs) and more than 10 research projects (17.5 lacs) sponsored by reputed industries ofIndia such as Sun Pharma Advance Research Centre Ltd., Lyka Labs Ltd., Panacea Biotech Ltd., Adithya Biologicals, Nabros Pharma Pvt.
