This memorial website was created in memory of Professor Anthony Gear, who passed away on 2nd September 2017 after suddenly collapsing whilst at home. He is survived by his wife, two children and two grandchildren.

Tony’s academic career spanned more than 30 years, and a number of institutions, including Manchester Business School, Oxford, Auckland and Glamorgan, as well as the University of Gloucestershire, where he worked since 2001. Tony held various positions in the institutions where he worked: senior research fellow, professor and head of department. His academic interests had also shifted over time from physics – the area of his doctorate – to operational research and latterly to aspects of management decision making. It was in this area that Tony published extensively – primarily with colleagues here and at Bath and Portsmouth.

Tony’s work at the University of Gloucestershire focused on research and the supervision of doctoral candidates within the Business School. He supervised over 30 candidates to successful completion, here and elsewhere, as well as examining both internally and throughout the UK. Those who worked with Tony will have benefitted from his generous insights, boundless kindness, ability to inspire confidence and his gentle humour. Tony’ approach to academia is ably captured in his comments on committees at Balliol “… the only two groups worth being on are those responsible for wine buying and car parking!” All who worked with Tony gained from the experience and his presence will be greatly missed. Tony will always remembered for his grace and personal warmth.
