railroad man

June 7, 2016

Dad was a railroad man. He worked for the Ann Arbor railroad for forty years. He began working in 1937 as a section hand also known as a "gandy dancer." Later Dad worked as a machinist. He loved railroading. He could tell stories about the rails all day. He use to take me over to the yards and let me ride on the engine. Boy, that was GREAT! And a whole lot of FUN! I was proud to be called a railroader man's daughter. Dad married Mom in 1939. They had four children. Elaine (1940-2006), Gary (1943-?), Mary Ann (1946-1948), and Dawn (1956-?). We were born in Owosso, Michigan. I spent more time with Dad 'cause I was the youngest. The best memory we shared was when we went to Old Tucson Studios in Arizona. John Wayne made some of his movies there and we were proud to walk where John Wayne walked. Dad loved country and bluegrass music and gospel music.
