Art's Purple Heart

Art was the first military person to be killed from the Norfolk area in WWII. He was awarded the Purple Heart for wounds recieved in action that resulted in his death on November 8, 1942.

As he had no children, his family recently donated his medal and paperwork to the Norfolk Veterans Home to be displayed. 

Both of Art's brothers  and his brother-in-law (Marguerite's husband) Harold Schaller served in WWII.  You can find Arnie and Gib on this site.  

Art and the Army

Art went into the Army in January 1942.  He and Annie had only a few months together before he shipped out.

He was in Kentucky for his basic training in an armored tank division.  He was home on furlough before he was sent overseas. He arrived in Ireland on May 39, 1942, from there he was sent to Africa.

He  died in Africa on November 8, 1942. He was only 28 years old.

Art and Anne Busch were married on September 14, 1941. 

Art had worked at Shanes's Grocery and Montgomery Wards.
He was employed at Nash Finch when he went into the army.


      

Arthur August Voecks

Art was born in Randolph, Nebraska on August 8, 1914, the first child of Otto and Martha Muehlmeier Voecks.

He had three younger siblings: two brothers, Arnold and Gilbert, and one sister, Marguerite.

The family moved to Norfolk when the children were all young. Art attended Christ Lutheran Church, and Norfolk  High.
