ForeverMissed

Ava Ann Goldsberry walked through the gates of Heaven on May 3, 2020. Her journey started on December 6, 1938 in Jackson County, West Virginia and later moved with her family to The Plains, Ohio where she met her high school sweetheart and husband Dale, and raised their three sons with love, affection, and a true sense of family. Their journey then continued to Naples Lake Country Club, and finally to Willowbrook Christian Assisted Living in Delaware, Ohio. Wherever they went, Ava had a way of making all those around her feel like family and of making sure no one felt like a stranger in her home (and motorhomes).

Ava often showed her love through cooking and baking and shared this love frequently with family and friends. She had a real talent in the kitchen as many know through her most famous dishes including her Paul Bunyan cookies, pies, Cherry Daylight, homemade ice cream, pepperoni rolls, potato salad, and many more that her relatives will continue to cook (or try to!) in her memory.

Ava’s love and creativity extended beyond the kitchen. Ava was a longtime member of the Plains Methodist Church Chorus. She also always kept her hands busy, whether it was crocheting, sewing, jewelry making, or painting. In her giving spirit, many people were able to enjoy handcrafted watercolor cards and large paintings that will be treasured forever.

Ava was an avid golfer and longstanding member of the Athens Country Club, and later a member of Naples Lakes Country Club. Good times were always had with Ava and Dale on the golf course. Many rounds were followed by many laughs around the card table. Ava loved to play Bridge, Gin, and other card games, and passed that passion down to her sons and grandchildren.

Ava had great love for The Plains and the Athens communities, and was a lifelong and fervent fan of both the Bulldogs and the Bobcats. Ava and Dale were longtime local business owners of Dale’s Sohio on Court Street in Athens. They owned and operated the service station for decades, before selling the business to their son Kevin and retiring to Naples, Florida.

Ava will be greeted in heaven by her parents Helen and Lloyd Kittle and her niece Katie Kittle. She is survived by her husband of 63 years, Dale. She is also survived by her brothers Ralph (& Reda) Kittle and Maurice (& Linda Collins) Kittle, as well as her three sons: Kevin (& Kristi) Goldsberry, Mark (& Sarah) Goldsberry, and Craig (& Leslie) Goldsberry. Ava will also be missed by her grandchildren Dustin (& Amy) Goldsberry, Jake Goldsberry, Ben (& Josh) Goldsberry, Maggie Goldsberry, Curtis Goldsberry, Alex Goldsberry, Darcy Cunningham, and Megan Cunningham, her great-grandchildren Saylor Goldsberry and Jonah Goldsberry, and other loving members of the Kittle and Goldsberry clans.

We are in strange times and so will not be having a public service or burial at this time. Ava had many friends and the family will miss seeing each of you in person and hearing your memories of your time spent with her. Any contributions you would like to make in her honor to the Alzheimer’s Foundation of America (https://alzfdn.org/support-us/donate/) would be welcomed and appreciated.

Arrangements are being made by Hughes-Moquin Funeral Home where friends and family may sign the online guestbook at www.hughesmoquinfuneralhome.com.

To the Goldsberry Family with deepest sympathy for your loss. Ava and Dale were close friends of ours for many years. We have wonderful memories of social activities, golfing together, visits in Naples and watching our children grow up together. Ava was a beautiful, kind person who saw the humor in most things...especially on the golf course. I still laugh every time I think about our golfing trip to Firestone to compete in a charity golf tournament when a storm and pouring rain caught us unprepared on the course. None of us girls had rain apparel except Ava who had an outfit for every occasion. This is the Ava her friends will remember...not the friend we lost years ago to a debilitating illness. May our beloved friend rest in peace.

Dale and Ava were our very best friends. When my wife (Arlene) and lived in Athens County, we played cards almost every Saturday night. Even after we left Athens County we remained good friends. We miss Ava and her wonderful cooking and her great smile

Ava and her family hold so many memories of my early childhood. I would enjoy a front row seat at her kitchen table in my H.S. years as she gracefully moved around her kitchen to prepare a quick dinner or snacks for the motor home. It didn't matter if she was in the kitchen or on the golf course, I marveled at her grace, beauty and poise in how she moved. I was fortunate in later years to receive one of her watercolor paintings that I continue to enjoy in my home today. She was loved by so many...my heartfelt love goes out to Dale, Kevin, Mark and Craig. She was a gem!

Ava and I shared a lot of memories on golf courses--mostly at WGA events at the Athens country club, but we also played together as teammates on Southeastern and Hocking College Open teams. We were together in a women's foursome that played 66 holes on the Longest Day of Golf to benefit the American Cancer Society. I vividly recall playing gin against Ava, 50 cents a game, on the long drive up to Cadiz for a Southeastern. Ava rescued me at the last minute when I needed alterations on a skirt to wear to the O'Bleness charity tournament dinner. She was so classy and so kind and great fun. Dale and Ava took their motor home to White Sulphur Springs, with Connie Stanforth and me as passengers where we had an unforgettable experience at the Solheim Cup. Ava drove the motor home to Pinehurst, with Connie, Maud Jidestig, and me, where we enjoyed watching a Women's Open. It wasn't all golf, though; the trip to Lancaster, to her brother's home, for an outing to jig frogs on the canal was all Ava's idea! So many wonderful and cherished times we shared together...some the best times of my life. Ava loved golf and card games, but most of all, she loved her family and was always a giving and loving friend. I have, and will continue, to miss her. I send my heartfelt sympathies to the family.

Will forever remember the card games with Dale and Ava. Always had a great time. Ava was the type of person that make you feel so welcome to her home. I have missed seeing her in the last few years. The boys were such a joy and were like nephews. Loved them all.

Dear Goldsberry Family,

SO, so many great Memories of Ava and Dale ... OU bobcat fans to the maximum degree. Memories from The Plains, Golf, The RV, and Athens Country Club, Athens High School, OU and of course - Sohio in the day. Ava always carried herself with such elegance, especially in the treatment and care of others and her devout love of family was always at the forefront. Thoughts and prayers to the entire Goldsberry extended family at this difficult time. Please know we are with you in mind and spirit, while maybe not in person. Heaven gained a great spirit and soul. Much Love, Judd and Kim Stephenson

Ava was a friend who was beautiful, talented and most of all dedicated to her family. She was an exceptional golfer who gathered many friends in her lifetime, me included. I have so many wonderful memories of trips with she and Dale in our younger years. We had so much fun. I want her family to know how very special she was and will be remembered by those of us who were privileged to have known her.
