Barbara Jean “Barbie” Deaner

Barbara Deaner (nee Campbell) was born on July 10, 1941 to her mother, Margaret, in Camden, N.J. She died peacefully on July 15, 2020 after a brief battle with lung cancer. She enjoyed every moment of her 79 years, nearly all of which she spent alongside her beloved husband, Philip. She is survived by Phil; her children: Barbara (Gregory), Debra, and John (Stacey); her sister Rita; her niece Colleen (Michael); her grandchildren: Lauren, Nicole (Matthew), Lindsey, Natalie and John Patrick; and her great grandchildren. Her family cherished their time with Barbara and would have loved to have more, as would all who knew her well.

Barbara was a social woman, with a contagious energy and passion for life that she shared with everyone around her. If there was music and a dance floor, Barb was at the center. To her, experiences were what made life rich. And by this standard, all would agree that she lived a richer life than most—enjoying more trips with family and friends than she could recount. She took every opportunity to play the odds in Vegas, cruise the Caribbean, tan on the Hawaiian beaches, and take her kids and grandkids to Disney World and the Wildwood boardwalk. If you are looking for an indication of whether she achieved the richness she sought, ask the staff in Las Vegas who knew her by name.

The happiness vacationing brought her was matched only by the joy Barbara experienced raising her family. Her devotion was strong and unwavering. She considered herself a lucky woman and spoke more about her children and grandchildren than herself. She made it a point to instill her passion for life and travel with her loved ones. Her family loved her dearly. They will miss her every day.

Barbara will always be remembered as a brilliant and trusted confidant who friends, family and business colleagues turned to in their toughest hours. She made a life and a career out of helping others. After graduating from Woodrow Wilson High School, Barbara spent nearly 30 years at RCA as a secretary, before taking on administrative roles with Philadelphia and South Jersey-based organizations and trusts, as well as working in the travel industry. She led by example and paid it forward whenever she could. She supported the American Heart Association, Boys Town, Wounded Warriors, St. Jude’s Hospital for Children – to name a few. But her greatest passion and most fulfilling work by far was her time as advocate for Rene, Valla and Sylvia--advancing their well-being and vitality with steadfast loyalty and prowess. “Where there's a will there's a way” was scribed for her.

Consistency was a hallmark – always good for a plain hamburger, fries, a hot cup of coffee, and dark chocolate. These tendencies, as well as her strong, sharp, generous qualities, remained intact until the end. With one last spin of the wheel and one more puzzle solved, Barbara resolved to end her fight with cancer, surrounded by her husband, children, and grandchildren.

Services will be private at the request of the family.

My Bill met Phil in 1971 when he started his job with the Postal Service. Upon meeting Barb, we all became fast friends, enjoying family gatherings, dinners out and especially our vacations! Lots of vacations together...fun times that will never be duplicated! We miss Barb so much already...our hearts are broken...broken because we’ll never see her again...broken for her husband, children, grands and greats! Things will never, ever be the same but I’m so very thankful for the times we spent together!

Our hearts are broken in half. We will miss our weekly dinner dates with you and Phil. The person you always said "I Hate You" to truly misses you more than you will ever know. I have only been your sister-in-law for 5 1/2 years but we had so much fun today between dinner playing rummy cube yelling at me for bringing you princess house from the "free store" but I know in my heart it was all because we LOVED each other. You are sadly missed by Skeet, Jeannette & Edward Deaner
