Barbara Makowski was born Barbara Pauline Chagaris, born to Arthur and Sophia Chagaris on February 11, 1944, in Cambridge, MA, and was the youngest of eight. She married her soulmate and partner for life, the late Dennis Carl Makowski, at 21. She had battled Parkinson's Disease for the last twelve years. But that never stopped her from giving hugs, witty comments, and love. She passed in her home in peace, surrounded by her children Kevin, Andrea, Jennifer, significant others, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, Jean, best friend of forty years, and loved ones.

Barbara was very crafty and created clothes for everyone, and she loved ceramics, crocheting, and sewing. Her hands were rarely still.  She was a dedicated mother first and foremost. Barbara treasured her children and embraced every moment with them. She especially loved her role as Yia-Yia. She is loved and well missed and favorite phrase “Good and You.”

Auntie Barbara

January 15, 2022
I have so many memories of my auntie Barbara. I remember her as a young girl with a very long ponytail. She was the youngest of eight and was the favorite of not only her siblings but of her brother-in-law’s too.

I remember her when she was expecting her first child. At that time Barbara was living with us in Hull. My mother kept me out of school one day so I could travel with my aunt to Chelsea Naval Hospital for one of her pre-natal appointments. We rode on buses, subways and buses again. It was such a cold day!

As a young mother, she returned to work. My mother worked at Tech Etch in Hingham, MA. Barbara worked there too. Yia Yia and I (maybe my sisters too) took care of Kevin.

eventually Barbara and Dennis moved to Hawaii but Barbara kept in touch with letters. I still have many of the letters she wrote. I wish I told her that I kept them.

it was nice for the whole Chagaris family when the Makowski’s moved back to the states. We could see her more often. Yia Yia loved to visit in Hawaii but she loved Vegas too !

I miss seeing and speaking with my aunt. On one of my last visits, she talked about her father and how he pronounced her name in Greek.  She tried to teach me but no matter how many times I tried, I couldn’t say it right! Finally I asked my Greek friend Peter to call her. So she could hear her name again, the same way her Papa said it. Love you Auntie Barbara
