Barbara Nadeau, 80, of Chandler, Arizona passed away peacefully Monday, February 8th, 2021. Barbara was born in Rockford Illinois on September 27, 1940. She moved with her family to Tempe Arizona where she grew up. She graduated from Tempe High School and Arizona State University. She met and fell in love with Robert Nadeau and they were married until his death in March 1981.

She later married Joseph Bates and became a beloved part of his family of many children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Joe and Barbara were together until his death in December 1999.

After graduating from college, she started teaching music in the Tempe Elementary Schools. She later taught 4th grade and retired after teaching for 32 years.

She was my music teacher at Rural school from Kindergarten through 6th grade (1967-1973) She always made music fun and I looked forward to her weekly class. I especially loved the chorus shows she would put on. I still remember a lot of the words from the Disney show we did. She was very kind, a teacher I remember fondly. Prayers for the family.

I know family and friend's hearts are heavy with the death of your beloved Barbara. I taught school with Barbara and always admired her calmness and sense of humor that she brought to the classsroom. I am reminded of a funny story that happened when Barbara was subbing at McKemy Middle School. She lived close enough to go home for lunch. One day she did, and decided to take a quick nap- but unfortunately overslept-and was late returning to her sub-position. While it was a bit embarrassing for her, she and I had a good chuckle! I know Barbara will be greatly missed. May the memories you made with Barbara help ease your grief.

I saw your grandmother's / mother's obituary in today's paper. I wanted to share that she passed on her love of the piano to me. I took piano lessons from Mrs. Nadeau when I was in grade school. We lived around the corner from her so I would ride my bike to her house each week. I remember, fondly now, though not so much then, memorizing pieces for a contest every year. I find that I can still play some of those pieces by memory today. I gives me a sense of accomplishment. I still play the piano and passed the love of musical performance to my own children!

I was never certain who enjoyed her class more,  the teacher or students. Her never ending patience, calm, reassuring manner was always so welcome and as one or two of my lifelong fellow friends amight say "Mike was a pain in the butt at times". I too took home piano lessons for many years before discovering girls but when a upright concert grand needed restoration,  the passion returned. May the lessons she taught both on and off the keys always be with you. She was truly one of a kind.

Mrs Nadeau, was an incredible and inspiring music teacher. She was my music teacher at Rural from kindergarten through 6th grade. 69-75. She always had a smile and made me feel so special. She was the highlight of my week.
I can still remember our recorder lessons! My heart goes out to your family as you experience the loss of this beautiful soul, she meant so much to so many. Sending prayers of comfort and healing to you and your family.
