On Barry’s Birthday 6/9/2018

September 6, 2018

I went to lay flowers at Barry’s Memorial at Hawkinge Crematorium today - Barry’s Birthday.

While leaving the flowers I could hear being played from the Chapel, Frank Sinatra singing ‘My Way’. The  Song that was played as we were leaving the Chapel at Barry’s funeral.

And as always when I am visiting Barry’s Memorial a little plane flew overhead.

Barry Page Boy with His brother David in 1949

May 15, 2018

In 1949 Barry and his brother David were page boys for Lily and Cyril Reader. Barry’s Mother Frances was Lily’s Cousin. Barry and his family spent wonderful holidays with Lily and Cyril at Stablehurst where Cyril worked on a farm. Barry loved the time he spent on the farm. Barry always wanted his own farm.

After leaving the farm to live at Darenth, Barry spent a lot of fun time in the company of Lily and Cyril at his parents home in Avery Hill Road.

Cyril died on the 9th April 2018. The same date as Barry but 2 years later - 9th April 2016.

The rose beyond the wall - A. L. Frink

Near a shady wall a rose once grew,

Budded and blossomed in God's free light,

Watered and fed by the morning dew,

Shedding it's sweetness day and night.

As it grew and blossomed fair and tall,

Slowly rising to loftier height,

It came to a crevice in the wall

Through which there shone a beam of light.

Onward it crept with added strength

With never a thought of fear or pride,

It followed the light through the crevice's length

And unfolded itself on the other side.

The light, the dew, the broadening view

Were found the same as they were before,

And it lost itself in beauties new,

Breathing it's fragrance more and more.

Shall claim of death cause us to grieve

And make our courage faint and fall?

Nay! Let us faith and hope receive--

The rose still grows beyond the wall,

Scattering fragrance far and wide

Just as it did in days of yore,

Just as it did on the other side,

Just as it will forever-more.

Family memories

April 30, 2017

Barry was a wonderful, kind, caring and generous person. I have some wonderful memories of our family get togethers with Barry doing one of his famous speeches - missing no one out and being in near hysterics at his 70th birthday speech.

I can still see his happy face when I called him 'daddy' after Val told me she was expecting Simon.

The strength and courage he showed during his illness amazed me.

GOD BLESS BARRY

Family memories

Words cannot express how sorry I was when Barry died

I along with many others have so many fond memories of him.

He was one of a kind

Friends memories

April 30, 2017

We have always thought of our friendship with you and Barry as being special. Despite being on different continents, the thread of continuity through Christmas letters has kept us in touch over the years.

We were so happy to see you both, and some of your family, in

Whistler.

Barry seemed to us to be such an active man. His love of family and passion for sports, especially skiing and sailing was obvious.

Family memories

April 30, 2017

There are too many memories to write down, great holidays, speedboat training, days on beaches, lots and lots more.

Feel very lucky and proud to call him my Uncle.

He will be greatly missed.

Family memories

April 30, 2017

We have fond memories of listening to Barry's stories of skiing or yachting or golfing and will miss these informative chats.

I think he will be  remembered best for his ability to make a formal occasion of any event with one of his 'short' speeches.

Family memories

. He loved to buy lots of food especially when visiting France and then testing my cooking skills!

. Related to the above '' well done the ladies!''

.Also related to the above : patting his tummy and saying '' I must go on a diet''

. Always being interested in everyone and everything.

. Patiently teaching me to ski.

. Testing my patience/endurance when teaching me to sk.

. Not that I was ever officially appointed, but being his caddie on many occasions whilst walking the golf courses.

. Surviving telling him to 'sort himself out!' And threatening to abandon the above unofficial position when he lost his cool playing golf at Arundel on Val's 70th Birthday.

. Expected high standards of himself and everyone else

. A very kind family man

Where do you begin, a song, a 'true' story, a long meandering speech, an activity to take part in, every second filled, it's going to leave a large void but that's going to be filled with so many happy and wonderful memories sadly passed all too quickly.

Barry has left big shoes to fill

Neighbour

April 30, 2017

For 34 years Barry and Val have been our neighbours so have shared memorable happenings like the1987 hurricane and the 2007 earthquake.

My abiding memory of Barry is that since he joined the Folkestone Choral Society a few years ago he kindly gave me a lift every Monday night and we had many conversations on various subjects. Latterly he spoke about his determination to accept  every medical procedure going. I greatly admired his courage and stoicism.

Neighbour

April 30, 2017

An early one: helping him to fish his ' flying shed 'out of our fish pond. We shared the funny side of it.

Over the last 34 years, all the hours spent out the front listening to his tales, from India, up a supply post, out at sea, down the river, on the slopes in France, playing golf in Grasse etc etc. Never a dull moment!

LOVED IT.

Medway Regatta Week - early 1970s

Barry must have been desperate when he asked me to crew for him for one day.

The first race, it was really windy and we capsized twice but still finished third. The race in the afternoon was much calmer so much so that nobody finished the race and the whole fleet was towed home. I seem to remember Barry being content with the result.

In approx 1948 we went on holiday to Stablehurst. To get there we cycled. Mum was on a Ladies bike and Dad was on the front of a tandem, I was on the back and Barry was in the side car.

We rode to Staplehurst which took a day.

On the way back as we were walking up Farningham Hill (old A20) a car came down the hill and skidded into the tandem. Barry was hurt, an ambulance was called his was taken to Dartford Hospital. We all went in the ambulance. Barry was kept in. Later when he was 21 he received compensation for his injury!

April 30, 2017

Probably the first time I met Barry was on an early visit to Avery Hill. Barry was in the front room drying his hair with a hair dryer AND wearing a hair net!!

Barry asked me if I would like a game of squash - I had never played BUT I had played badminton. It was not a 'walk over' and he had to work hard to win. ( I ended up with squash  elbow!).

In Monaco Barry showed me how to improve my crawl - sadly he will never know his tuition was ineffective.

Barry's last gift to me was a 'Seaboard' hard hat to use on archaeological digs.

Thanks for the memories Barry

Family

April 30, 2017

We have all lost someone special to us.

Barry led a very very full life and touched so many other people's lives, he was always full of enthusiasm which was so infectious.

I know from talking to him over the last few weeks that he was immensely proud of his family and what they have achieved and the potential he could see in his grand children.

While we will all miss him let us go forward knowing it is what he would want

Family

April 30, 2017

We have many wonderful memories of Uncle Barry.

I remember one day at the Arcade taking hours to Pack up a picnic and Uncle Barry's Planes. We then we drove to Tailbrigg. As soon as the plane took off Uncle Barry then drove it straight into the side of the hill.

We will always Remember his Speeches, Singing, Smile, and Speedo's and Blackbirds.

Family

April 30, 2017

I'm so sorry that Uncle Barry is no longer with us. He was a very kind and funny Uncle. I am going to miss his family speeches and will keep hold of the fond memories I have of him playing on the beach, surfing, sailing at the sailing clubs and his wonderful rendition of 'If I were a blackbird'.

I'm so incredibly sad to have lost him too soon.

Family

April 30, 2017

I'm so very sad that my lovely Uncle Barry has gone. He was always fun, funny, kind, generous and supportive. I love how he always challenged us to better ourselves in everything and always motivated us to try harder and better.

I'm grateful for all the time he spent with us. Teaching me to sail and ski and I will miss him profoundly. He was a rock.

Family

April 30, 2017

Barry has been a big part of mine and my Family's lives for about 45 years. I am very sorry that his illness has taken him from us at such a relatively young age and very early on in his retirement.

He was one of life's characters. Always ready with advice ( if needed or not), never afraid to tell Cheesey jokes or sing tunes in his own key.

BUT most of all he had a very kind heart, of which many times my family were recipients. The most recent being the chopping down of trees in my garden, when he was quite ill. A daunting task for anyone.

One of his earliest being the rocking and singing to my daughter, for two hours while I washed nappies and cleaned the house.

Sadly I have now lost my second debating partner. We enjoyed a good discussion ( I know others didn't) but we parted as friends.

Remember this 'Deep in our hearts a memory is kept of one we all loved and will NEVER forget'

From golfing friends

April 30, 2017

We we will always remember him for his outstanding friendliness and kindness, a thorough gentleman in every respect. The times we spent in Barry's company will always be treasured memories for us.

A happy group of cousins

April 30, 2017

A happy group of cousins who were allowed to play freely in Oxleas Woods and later in Avery Hill Park. Our many day trips and holidays to the coast added many more happy memories which cemented our deep friendships and a strong family bond. My love for Barry and my high esteem for him will never die

Memories of Uncle Barry

Happy memories of Barry

July 20, 2016

We remember Barry as a kind and friendly neighbour - always up for a chat.

Probably some of our best memories were, seeing Barry with '' Miners Lamp" on head trying at about 11.00pm to pack the car when you were off skiing at 6.00am!! Happy Memories.

Special memories of Barry

July 20, 2016

As as we knew him always with a cheery smile and something to chat about, mainly about our families.

As neighbours we would so often see them all busying about getting their boats ready and off they would go.

He will be sadly missed.

                                            The Setting of the Sun

The glory of the setting sun

that  paints the evening sky

Reminds the heart

that life holds so much more

then meets the eye

And I this way,

your heart may find

the strength to see you through,

In cherishing the memories

that mean so much to you.

And like the golden sunset,

when a loved one leaves this earth,

Each tear that falls reminds us

just how much each life is worth,

For in our hearts ,

the golden glow

of memory shines bright,

Spreading hope and comfort

through the shadows of the night.....

Barry really was a great guy. Not only so clever and intelligent. But just in his life.

We know that you, Simon and Richard have known that for a long time but so have others. The grandchildren have had a great role model in their lives.

We are sorry you have lost such a special person. We didn't see a lot of Barry but it wasn't necessary to know him long to be impressed by him.

                                         The Rose Beyond The Wall

A rose once grew where all could see,

Sheltered beside a garden wall,

And, as the days passed swiftly by,

It spread its branches, straight and tall.

One day, a beam of light shone through

A crevice that had opened wide -

The rose bent gently towards its warmth

Then passed beyond to the other side.

Now you who deeply feel it's loss,

Be comforted - the rose blooms there

It's beauty even greater now,

Nurtured by God's own loving care.

                                                         In Sympathy

Do not stand at my grave and weep;

I am not there. I do not sleep.

I am a thousand winds that blow.

I am the diamond glint on snow.

I am the sunlight on  ripened grain.

I am the gentle Autumn rain.

When you awake in the morning's hush

I am the swift uplifting rush

Of quiet birds in circled flight.

I am the stars that shine at night.

Do not stand at my grave and cry;

I am not there. I do not die.

How sad I am to lose a dear friend and colleague, the words above reference the winds and I thought of Barry's love of sailing and reminded me of a couple of afternoon I spent with him at Westbere and the Kings School Sailing Club.

Also of course our many trips to France and your visits to us when we lived there and latterly I know how much he loved our meals at the Hotel Atlantique in Wimeroux sitting by the big window with a view of the sea.

Memories of Barry

June 25, 2016

Barry was a great neighbour and supportive friend to my Dad for about  40 years.

Whenever I popped over to visit Dad, he always seemed to be standing in your drive chatting to Barry.

I will always be grateful for the time that Barry spent with Dad during his illness last year - we felt that I've lived through the sailing and skiing trips with you all.

We always marvelled at what an actIve man he was, even until a few months ago

He will be sorely missed and it was a privilege to have known him

A poem for Barry

June 25, 2016

Barry the club thrower was how he was known,

Out on the course in a world of his own,

If his ball should stray, and find the sand,

He was not amused you understand,

In the depth of the bunker, was Barry Dodds

He and the sand at obvious odds

His annoyance was purely aimed at himself,

His frustration not entirely good for his health,

Out from the bunker, a club would fly,

Barry emgered, his anger contained,

But sitting there smugly,

The ball remained

Memories about Barry

June 25, 2016

I knew nothing about sailing when we moved to Hythe but was quickly into becoming a regular crew on the Scorpion boats and learned a lot of nautical terms from Barry and many unrepeatable! He was inspirational and very competitive. He may have had a reputation for being late - but on the start line he was one of the first. Barry always had a smile on his face and willing to try anything to help others. His personality was infectious and his willingness to engage meant he attracted the respect of all. It was a privilege to have known him

Memories of Barry

A smiling face in the back of his scorpion. Persuading me to take over from him as the Scorpion Class Association Chairman - I think he rather understated the commitment required of the role! He was very persuasive!
