Mama Ndlela was a fine soul inside and out. She filled a void in my life of a mother that I lost in 1994 when I lost my dear mother. Mama Ndlela provided the emotional and physical support that I needed to move on in life. She even became the best ever gogo (grandma) to my 3 children who loved her so much because she loved them even more. She taught all of us how to love each other unconditionally. This is one human being who will reign in all of our hearts forever! Farewell my Queen, farewell sweetheart! farewell mama! You inspire me to work so much harder as a Christian because I look forward to seeing you again in heaven. Lala kahle Ndlela.

Dear Uncle Charles, Sibusiso, Bongani, Andile, Emily, Nandi and Nia

One is never ready for the loss of a family member regardless of who it is. The news of Aunt Babsie's passing came to us through Aunt Gugu. The rest of the evening was spent reminiscing with Khosi of the wonderful memories, moments and experiences shared with Auntie. This wonderful, blessed relationship and journey started back then when our parents allowed us to be your flower girls when you got married.
Aunt Babsie, I cherish all that you taught us Khosi and I, the times we sat with you as young girls and you shared life's journeys with us, and many other memories. The books shared with us, I will always look at them with fondness . Thank you for your love, kindness and prayers which will always be embedded in my heart.
As a family may you be consoled by the experiences you shared with Auntie, may the life lessons learned through her be precious memories. She is resting now and at peace.

Tribute to Mamkhulu Babsi

A life well lived deserves celebration and appreciation.

Today I would like to celebrate my mamkhulu. The sweetest sweetheart I’ve ever known, lover of beauty and class yet humble at heart, an optimist, support system, prayer warrior, and many other attributes. A mother to all and wife to one. Siyabonga boNdlela for sharing her with us.

I look back and thank the Lord for affording us an opportunity to be loved the way ma loved us all, her siblings and cousins’ children as her own. I pray I was able to reciprocate her love.

She was one of a kind. She was kind hearted, generous, wanted only the best for us, fed us well. I will always think of her at Thanksgiving, with all the food that will have been leftover, she’d encourage us to ‘vaccum the fridge’ . Sikhuluphele sinjena asizenzi, uthando lwakhe.

I will forever miss our chats and prayers together. She would encourage prayer always especially when things were unclear. I got through a number of situations because of her. She was indeed an angel in her own right.

To the Ndlela family, Thank you for all your love and sacrifices towards her. May the Lord richly bless you. Babomkhulu siyabonga asiphezi for having been by her side always. We love you dearly Godide, Mpemba .

To extended family and friends, thank you for the love you showed to ma.

This week is a difficult week for us all but the family in California more as you are in the brunt of it all. We pray that the Lord will guide and that all arrangements will be run accordingly

We thank God for mamkhulu’s life, it blessed us all in more ways than one. May her soul Rest In Peace, she will forever be missed ❤️.

Her Love will forever be engraved in our hearts.

With love,
Zandile

I will always remember going to church at home in Durban, and the wonderful feeling of us all being together with Sis Babsie, a warm, compassionate and vibrant woman who always went out of her way to help others - no matter what; a dignified woman who had a passion for life; attributes which endeared her to everyone she came in contact with. The list of tributes pouring in from all over, is a great testament to her loving, giving nature, a remarkably devoted, dedicated, thoughtful, God-loving woman, whose love was expressed in many kind ways to countless souls, which earned her so many long lasting friendships over the years. Looking forward to that glorious morning when we will all be hugging and greeting our loved ones and our Sis Babsie and others who have gone ahead of us. Our thoughts and prayers are with her family during this difficult time. "God is closest to those with broken hearts." - Jewish Proverb.

A life lived for God. Gogo shared her life and space to glorify the Lord. Gogo showed love towards everyone she met and loved her family wholeheartedly. I’m grateful to have spent time with her and family during my years of education in America. I’m thankful for her support in every single milestone in my life and I will be forever be grateful for the lessons she taught me about life and relationships. Gogo was an amazing financial support to me when I was a student at Andrews University and she was an amazing mother to my late Mother Nomvula Cele and for that I thank God for her presence in our lives. I pray that the entire Ndlela family are comforted by God and by the many amazing tributes Gogo is receiving.

Thank you is not enough for all that you’ve done for me and rest assured We shall meet again!

Mama Ndlela was like a mother and a best friend to me, her life was a blessing to me and so many others. I thank God for giving me the opportunity to visit and sing hymns at her bed side a few days before your passing. The fact that she is no longer around will always cause pain in my heart. Am looking forward to that great reunion when the sting of death will be defeated. I will cherish the advice she gave me and treasure the memories we shared... like attending the ladies tea at Loma Linda with our lovely hats. I miss her terribly! May God comfort Dr Ndlela who has lost his beautiful soulmate/best friend and the rest of the family. May she Rest In Peace.

Always on the move, always smiling and caring. A real fighter! Old is not a word that could fit mama, she radiated energy and service. Plenty that I have learnt from the few times that I interacted with her. Only God can give strength and comfort to the family at this time. It's my prayer that you all may find this peace in Christ.

We used to call her "sis B", back in the mid seventies. I was youth in our church, Umlazi Central SDA Church in Durban, South Africa. Sis B used to teach us everything about becoming a responsible woman of God, in and out of the church. The program was called "Junior Dorcas" back then. She was loved by all of us, she too was very loving. She had a way of making all of us feel equally loved, a way of making each person feel special. She would correct people without making them feel inferior or looked down upon. May the whole family be comfoted in knowing that, "very soon, the trumpet shall sound and we shall meet on that beautiful shore" Forever missed.

Another flower has folded it's petals waiting for rays of sunlight on the morrow!
"Lord teach us to number our days, that we may gain a heart of wisdom." Ps 90:12.
She was kind, positive and practical. She belived in me and pushed me to achieve my goals. She pushed my young family then to apply for a green card when we were thousands of miles removed from her. She would call and say, " have you started the process yet? Please do, it will help your husband and children in the long run.," it took us a while to do it. 22 years latter when i look back I say, "surely, she was inspired by the Holy Spirit." Dr. Ndlela and family, sorry for your loss. She was one of a kind. Good night mam.

Her Life

Sweetheart

February 29, 2020
by Emily N

We called her Sweetheart, and it would be easy to assume the nickname came from regular use of the term of endearment. She’d say, “sweetheart,” as she kissed each of your cheeks in greeting. She’d sigh, “sweetheart,” to encourage or comfort you when you shared even the most mundane triumphs or losses. And, once you shared all that you had to share you’d stand facing each other, your hand resting in hers, she’d take you in and her final appraisal was always a warm and gentle, “oh, sweetheart.” The nickname came less from repetition and more from her innate ability to make you simultaneously aware and comfortable with the depth of your own goodness.

Birth and Early Childhood:

Bella Ndlela was born in a little town called Mafeking, situated on the border of the Cape Province and Botswana in South Africa. She was one of 10 children born to Henry Selby and Miriam Noluthando Msimang. Her father was a political activist who worked tirelessly for the cause of Black Africans during the years of apartheid in South Africa. He was the co-founder of the political organization known today as the ANC (African National Congress).  Her mother was a devout Seventh Day Adventist and a pioneer in fostering community outreach in the face of a harsh political environment.

The family moved around in South Africa and finally settled in Edendale, Pietermaritzburg in Kwa-Zulu Natal Province. This is where Bella spent her early childhood. She spent most of her time growing up in Christian schools,  including Bethel Adventist College. In 1956 she embarked upon the career of Nursing at King Edward VIII Hospital in Durban, South Africa. After completing her General Nursing she went on to specialize in Obstetric Nursing (labor & delivery). Thereafter she went to Baragwaneth Hospital in Johannesburg which was at that time the largest hospital in the Southern Hemisphere. She pursued a specialty in Pediatric Nursing.

Adulthood:
It was in 1963 when Bella met her husband Charles who was, at that time, engaged in his studies at the University of Natal Medical School in Durban.  They met in the Pediatric Dept at King Edward VIII Hospital. After Charles completed his studies at Medical School in 1964, they got married on July 3, 1965.  They were married for 54 years. When Charles proposed marriage to Bella, being a God fearing young lady, asked "have you prayed about it? You go and pray.”

Unfortunately, Bella’s mother passed away before she was able to see her daughter get married, but her father, Selby Msimang, was alive to see the day.  Selby was not allowed by the apartheid regime to even give a speech or to hand over his daughter because he was banned from attending public gatherings.

Despite all the political drama prevailing at the time, the wedding, on July 3, 1965, was, "the wedding of the year.” It took place in Edendale and was attended by dignitaries from all over the country. One of the most striking features was that the bridal party was multiracial, which was rare in South Africa at the time. Bella and Charles have been blessed with three wonderful sons, Sibusiso, Bongani and Andile. Bella devoted all her early married life to raising and nurturing the three children.

1980 was a major milestone in the life of this family when they moved to the United States and settled in Loma Linda, California. There were a lot of adjustments to be made, and Bella did such a wonderful job of taking care of the entire family.  With all of the ups and downs, and God’s grace, the family was able to make a second home for themselves.

Illness and Death

Bella was diagnosed with stomach cancer a few years ago, which she fought gallantly.  She remained faithful throughout, and constantly relied on God's promises to keep her going, day by day.

Bella is survived by her loving family:  husband; Charles, sons; Sibusiso, Bongani, and Andile, daughter-in-law; Emily, grandchildren; Nandi and Nia, and sister, Khubi Mbokazi.  She is also survived by many nieces, nephews, cousins, and grandchildren from all parts of the world, who loved her dearly.

Her Legacy

Bella's life can be summed up in three statements "dedication to family,” "dedication to community," and "dedication to God.”

She loved her family dearly, and made many sacrifices to make sure they were catered for.  When her first grandchild was born, Bella retired from her career in nursing, so she could dedicate her time to helping raise them.  She was a wonderful, caring, and doting grandmother, mother and wife.

She was dedicated to her community, in Africa, and in America.  Just like her mother, she was sensitive to the needs of the disadvantaged in the community.  The memory of the difficulties she faced as an immigrant moved Bella to quickly check in on new African immigrants in the country.  She would visit them often, to check on them, bring them food, and leave them with a word of encouragement.  Bella never forgot her family and community in Africa.  She sponsored children to go to school, helped build churches, and took care of the widowed and orphaned.  She practiced her profession of caring all around.

She loved serving her God and exalting His name.  She raised her children to be God fearing, and to serve God with diligence, just as she did.

Her memory will forever be engraved in our hearts as she is laid to eternal rest.
