Carlene Parker - True LightMother Kilgore was a blessing to be around. Her gentle and caring spirit was contagious. As I held her hand several times during alter prayer, I could sense the meekness and loving spirit she carried and could see how it made it easier for Vivian to take care of her the way she did. And boy! When I first heard Mother Kilgore sing! What power and energy in praising the Lord!! All we could do was smile and join in! Sitting by the organ... proudly smiling and enjoying Vivian play.... grateful to have had such a full life!

I have known Sister Kilgore since the early seventies from church at Bishop Boone’s church where she was the secretary! I remember her and her husband for being sharp as a tact. She had an sweet personality and didn’t meet no strangers, she always would give me a big hug and kiss made me feel special whenever I seen her. I always loved her smile and especially her singing.I’m going to miss her ! But won’t forget her! My condolences to The Whole Family! I love y’all!

Even though I only knew her a short time..(True Light MB Church) she showed me a genuine love, a contagious smile, and always complimented my appearance. She hugged and kissed me everytime we crossed paths, and she dubbed me "her boy". I will miss her spirit and the way she loved singing Praises to God. May God bless you all (family) and keep you strong..Mother is resting now...

MOTHER TO SON
LANGSTON HUGHES
Well,son, I’ll tell you:
Life for me ain’t been no crystal stair.
It’s had tacks in it,
And splinters,
And boards torn up,
And places with no carpet on the floor--
Bare.
But all the time
I’se been a-climbin’ on
And reachin’ landin’s,
And turnin’ corners,
And sometimes goin’ in the dark
Where there ain’t been no light.
So boy, don’t turn your back.
Don’t set down on the steps
‘Cause you finds it’s kinder hard.
Don’t you fall down now--
For I’se still goin’, honey,
I’se still climbin’,
And life for me ain’t been no crystal stair.

Her Life

Celebration of Life

February 7, 2019

Bernardette Thelma Kilgore was born on January 3, 1935 in Detroit, Michigan to Lillie Bell Martin and the Late Bishop George Washington Martin. She was the 8th of 12 children. Bernardette graduated from Inkster High School and attended Wayne State University in Detroit, Michigan majoring in English. Bernardette had many hobbies that she enjoyed; softball, tennis, cooking, crossword puzzle, playing her saxophone, and of course singing. She was employed in several fields of work. She worked for the Internal Revenue in the collections department; she was a dedicated employee at Northville Hospital as a nursing attendant. Lastly, she retired from Michigan Bell where she served in sales and customer service and later became a Supervisor in the repair department. While employed within Michigan Bell, Bernardette also formed a company choir who sang for many events throughout the city of Detroit.

Bernardette was first married to Charles Adams and to their union; they were blessed with one child Pamela. Some years later God blessed Bernardette to marry the absolute love of her life; Jessie E. Kilgore, Sr. and to this union, two children were born; Vivian, and Jessie Jr. Later Bernardette and Jessie decided they wanted more children and decided to adopt two sons, Deandre and Lamont.

Bernardette gave her life to Christ at a very young age starting her journey at Solomon’s Temple where her Pastor was Bishop Bonner. While a member of Solomon’s Temple, she sang with the original Joy Bells Choir. After several years there, God lead her to another church; the New Liberty Apostolic Faith Church pastored by the late Bishop G.M. Boone. While at New Liberty, Mother Kilgore participated in several auxiliaries and held many positions. Mother Kilgore was the Church Secretary, the Choir Director, and the Choir President. Mother Kilgore’s father; Bishop Martin began Pastoring in April 1934 in Detroit, MI then later in Flint, Mich, Inkster MI; after which he retired. After years had gone by the Lord spoke to Bishop Martin at the young age of 85 and instructed him to establish a new work Holy Temple Church of the living God in Jesus W.C. ( which stands for without controversy), Inc. and his daughter Bernardette believed, trusted and had faith in the call. Mother Kilgore even created the building design; she was very gifted and had many talents.

Bernardette Kilgore was a faithful and dedicated member who wore many hats. Mother Kilgore was again the Church Secretary, the Business Manager, the Choir Director, the Choir President, One of the main Cooks, You name it, and Mother Kilgore did it. Holy Temple is now under the leadership of her daughter, Pastor Pamela Dixon. After taking ill, Mother Kilgore decided to relocate with her daughter Vivian to Jackson, Mississippi. While in Mississippi, Mother Kilgore attended True Light Church pastored by Pastor Marcus Cheeks. However, she remained a member of Holy Temple Church until her transition. Mother Kilgore was very loved by every church she served with and we be greatly missed by all who were blessed to come in contact with her.

Bernardette was preceded in death by parents; George and Lillie Bell Martin, siblings; George Martin, Jr. (Melvina), Cornelia Matthews (Vaughn), Ruth Williams (Hampton), Betty Waters (Nick), Janet Lampkin (Cecil), Jaqueline Knight (Robert), Jean Johnson (Levi), and her baby brother Hamil Martin.

She leaves to cherish her memories her five loving children; Pamela Dixon (Samuel), Vivian Townsend (Morris), Dr. Jessie E. Kilgore, Jr., Deandre Woods, and Lamont Hatton. She leaves 8 grandchildren; PamKenyon Logan, Ernest H. Edmond IV (Donna), Jessica Mathis, Samuel Dixon, Jr., Krystal Dixon, Tiffany Townsend, Jessie Kilgore III, and Denae Kilgore. She leaves 7 great Grandchildren; Dylan, Jailyn, Peyton, Ernest V (Cinco), Maurion, Chayse, and Deandre Jr. and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

She kissed Uncle Jessie!!

February 11, 2019

I remember a time when I was a kid and my cousins and I were crossing the street, coming back from children's church in the fellowship hall after service at Holy Temple. She was sitting in the car with Uncle Jessie, I think he was heading to another church. Before she got out of the car they started kissing and my cousins and I started saying "eeeewwwwwww!". She heard us and made a remark like " one day you will thank God that you have someone to kiss like that!"

She was always there

February 11, 2019

My mom and I were reflecting on the many many many times that Aunt Bernardette had been there to support and cheer us on. She made it a point to be present and available and always had a kind word to share. From the moment my father died when I was 9 years old until this last October when I presented my work at a national conference, she was there. She has always made me feel like I could do anything and she ALWAYS  smiled when she said my name. I would try to tell her how fabulous she was and she would say "its Jesus." I remember the love she always showed.

She ran onto the field!

February 7, 2019

One memory I have is when I played football for the Detroit Police Athletic League (Westside Pirates). We were playing the Cowboys. I played strong safety but I also returned kicks.  On the 2nd return of the game an opposing player hit me....and hard!  I literally saw stars....but when I looked up I also saw momma!  She had ran onto the field!!!  I know she loved me but when I tell you I did not live that down for the rest of the season!!!!  Just too funny when I think about it!!!!
