PALISADE -- Bernes "Bernie" J. Schutte, 69, died Wednesday (March 20, 2002) while on duty as a fireman at a fire near Hamlet.

He was born Oct. 8, 1932, to Clyde T. and Dorothy K. (Bolte) Schutte at Lawrence. He served in the U. S. Army during the Korean conflict from 1953-1955. He completed his education while in the army. He lived and worked in Palisade since 1955.

On Sept. 21, 1958, he married DeAnna Phares at Palisade. He worked for the Great Plains Communication Telephone Company for 48 years. He had been with the Palisade Volunteer Fire Department for 42 years.

He was a member of the Palisade United Methodist Church where he served on the Board of Trustees. He was a former fire chief and president of the Palisade Volunteer Fire Department and served as president of the Palisade Rural Fire District Board. He also was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post No. 7028, AMVETS Post No. 14, the Masonic Lodge No. 216 A.F. & A.M., where he was a past master. He was a member of many state firefighter organizations.

He was preceded in death by his parents; an infant daughter, JoLee Ann; one brother, Norman G. Schutte; stepfather, William C Stearn; and one brother-in-law, William Meyer. Survivors include his wife, DeAnna of Palisade; one son, Michael and wife, Leota Schutte of Seward; one daughter, Michelle and husband, Caine McCormick of Imperial; one brother, Ret. Col. Sam Schutte and wife, Linda of Malcom; one sister, Yvonne and husband, Larry Ault of Gothenburg; father-in-law and mother-in-law, Harley and Dessa Phares of Palisade; one sister-in-law, Charlotte Schutte of Holdrege; and six grandchildren.

Services will be Saturday, 11 a.m., at Palisade High School with the Rev. Michael Laing officiating. Interment will be in the Palisade Cemetery.

Visitation is Friday until 8 p.m. at the Carpenter Breland Funeral Home in McCook.

Memorials may be given in his name.

Thinkin of old times. Heading to dads grave for holiday visit. Miss a lot but memories prevail. Tryin to find dads daughter. My sister. Didn't know til few years back. Any info be great. Phil Schutte....pjs42573@gmail.com
