Betty Scott Ewan died peacefully surrounded by family in Dallas on January 5, 2019 at the age of 87, ready to join her Savior in heaven.
Betty is preceded in death by Donald Noble Ewan, her husband of 60 years. Betty is survived by her children, Linda and husband Jerry Roudebush of Austin, Brenda and husband Jim Shute of Dallas, grandchildren Scott and wife Michelle Roudebush of Dallas, Laura Shute of San Antonio, Molly and husband Kyle Powell of Dallas, and great grandchild Penny Rose Roudebush of Dallas.
Betty was born on September 19, 1931 in Dallas, Texas at St. Paul Hospital to Elizabeth and George Scott. She graduated from Southern Methodist University in 1954 with a degree in Elementary Education, was an alumnae of the Zeta Tau Alpha chapter there, and post graduation taught at Bradfield Elementary in University Park. She married Donald Noble Ewan, in Pampa, Texas on June 19, 1955. They began dating after Betty borrowed, with no intent to return, Don’s only pencil at a student council meeting. She requested a cup of Coffee at the Toddle House as a trade for returning his pencil. They fell deeply in love and together wrote one of the ultimate love stories. After marriage they lived in Dallas, soon moving to Abilene. Betty supported Don’s career journey in sales which eventually led them to establish their roots in Midland, Texas. The couple was blessed with 2 daughters, and Betty set about teaching them how to care for others like she did for everyone. Her children remember her as a kind, gentle, patient, driven, joyful and downright funny mother who encouraged them to pursue their goals and dreams. She always said “you can do anything if you try”.
Betty was accomplished at volunteer work and often was a leader in the community. She had her own stationery business, The Midland Secretariat, that she sold in 1985. She was a generous individual who loved the Lord and everyone around her. She could make anyone feel important and valued, and had an infectious laugh. She was an active and dedicated member of the SMU Alumnae Association, Zeta Tau Alpha, Daughters of the American Revolution, Contemporary Study Club, Fortune 20, Los Cochinos Dinner Club, Junior League Sustainer, Midland Country Club Ladies Golf Association, First United Methodist Church of Midland and their Sunday School Partners Class. In their retirements years Betty and Don enjoyed spending their summers in Kerrville where they were active members and attendants of River Hill Country Club, First United Methodist Church of Kerrville, and were consistently found spending time on the golf course and sharing meals with dear friends. Betty and Don created many family traditions including family Easters at their home in Kerrville, Christmas Eve limo rides to see Christmas lights, many family vacations, endless game nights, and plenty of times baking chess pie, banana bread, and decorating Easter lamb cakes. Betty and Don never missed a birthday, graduation, move, or any other big or small family milestone. Most importantly Betty and Don daily represented the love of Christ in word and in action.
Services are scheduled in Dallas and Midland. In Midland, the service is January 19, at 2:00pm at Glass Memorial Chapel at First United Methodist Church Midland (300 N Main St, Midland, TX 79701). In Dallas, the celebration of life is January 11, at 4:00pm in the library at Edgemere (8523 Thackery Street Dallas, Texas 75225). Kyle Powell will officiate the service and the celebration.
