Always ready to "crack" a joke!

May 20, 2020
In the Spring of 2015, I was walking down the front porch steps when Molly, Beverly's playful Border Collie mix, ran down in front of me, wrapping her lead around my feet, sending me flying off the steps head first! As Beverly and Lee were screaming, "Look out, Linda!" — as if I had any choice how, where, or when I would stop my forward motion — I bounced off the corner of the concrete steps, skidded face-down across the cement walkway, and finally came to a halt in the front yard.

I lay there, face-down, surprised I was alive and wondering if I dare try to move, when it slowly dawned on me that my nose had become the unwilling recipient of a mixture of mud and Molly poo! Beverly ran over, knelt beside me, and commanded, "Linda, don't move!"

Someone was yelling, "Dial 911!" and I heard others gathering and asking what they could do to help. Beverly was a real trooper and took charge of the entire scene.

Laying her hand on my back, she began trying to assess the extent of my injuries, even wiping my nose with a napkin, picking out as much dog poo as possible. "The ambulance is on its way, Linda! You're gonna be okay," she consoled.

"Am I lying in dog poop?" I asked with a whine.

"Yes, sweetie, but they'll get it," she soothed, trying to stifle a chuckle.

I heard the ambulance pull up and, having been a Paramedic years ago, I wondered how they would immobilize and turn me over and what it would feel like to be on a back board. I hoped my neck wasn't broken. ("Ohhhh, what will I do if my neck snaps when they turn me over and I end up paralyzed?" I thought.)

Never being one to neglect the humor of any situation, Beverly broke through my dazed wonderings and whispered, "Linda, honey . . . instead of worrying about the dog poo, you should worry about your butt crack showing!"

SIGH...!!

As the husky good-looking firemen began rescuing me from my predicament, I wondered who would rescue me from the humiliation that was consuming me...

I don't know if it was days or hours before I recognized what she'd done for me, not to me. With that one remark about my derriere, she had distracted me from obsessing about my injuries and pain, and she'd given me a new trivial obsession. That may well have been the most helpful thing anyone could have done for me in that moment!
