William Patrick Sedlak, or Bill as he was affectionately known by the people in his life, was born on April 8th, 1961 in Charleroi Pennsylvania to William and Evelyn Sedlak. Growing up, Bill was involved for many years at St. Jerome’s church in Charleroi, where he played basketball and developed the strong moral character that he was known for throughout his life. After graduating from Charleroi Area High School in 1979, where he was on the swim team, Bill studied chemical engineering at Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh, PA. While at CMU, Bill was a dedicated member of the Sigma Alpha Epsilon fraternity, where he picked up the nickname “Studlak”.

In the mid-80’s, Bill moved to Virginia, where he began a long career with United States Navy, for some time as a contractor and more recently as a government employee. Bill was well-liked and respected by his colleagues both in the government and at the various companies he worked for. Virginia is also where he met Linda J White, who he married in 1990 and with whom he had two children, Emily and Claire Sedlak. In Bill’s adult life, he was a voracious daily reader of sports news and often listened to Pittsburgh sports radio - Here we Go Steelers! He never missed a school or sporting event for either of his daughters, who he called “the light and loves of his life”. Bill would frequently visit his hometown, Charleroi, to see his family and grab a slice - or a whole pizza - from Armando’s. In 2004 Bill met and fell in love with Susan Sawyer, who he loved dearly for the remainder of his life. In his later years Bill spent his time reading his massive Tom Clancy collection, watching football every Sunday while making victory chili, and playing with his cat. He had many animal companions throughout his life and was a lifelong animal lover. He also loved grilling and eating them – the man knew every part of a cow.

Bill has been described as a charismatic goofball, a prankster, a great gift-giver, a sweet and fun-loving son, a supportive and humorously annoying brother, a fiercely proud and unconditionally loving father, and was the type of guy who would dig his neighbor’s car out of the snow without even being asked to. Bill was a loving man and was loved by so many in return.

Bill was very close to the many members of his large family. Bill is predeceased by his father, William. He is survived by his mother Evelyn, his sisters Carol, Susan, Janet, and Dawn, his daughters, Emily and Claire, his long-term girlfriend and partner, Susan Sawyer, and his loveably mischievous cat, Gato.

I met Bill several times through Claire, one of my closest friends since high school. The kindness and goodness of Bill is absolutely clear through his kind eyes, smile, and nature with others. And it absolutely continues to live through Claire and Emily - confident, unique, loving, and incredible humans .

I had the pleasure of working with Bill a few years ago, and it was always a highlight in my day to hear one of his anecdotes from his vast life experience. Bill can do work attitude inspired everyone that new him, his intellectual know how and work ethics allowed him to engage with SMEs and leadership to develop novel solutions to challenging projects. Bill inspired those who worked close to him and will always be remembered as the guy who bridged interactions and harmony across his peers creating a pleasant work environment. I did not ever have the pleasure of meeting Bill in person but I truly enjoyed working with him in support of the Navy. He brought joy to those around him. He will be missed by many. My sincerest condolences to his family and friends.

I have such great memories of our time at SAE: hijinks around campus, road trips, camping at Allegheny National Forest, slamming steak-um sandwiches in the early AM after too many beers and just hanging around. Bill was a fun and great guy. Rest in peace my friend.

Bill and I worked together supporting the Navy as Contractors. I always enjoyed his collaborative nature whenever I engaged him on anything. I was really honored when he returned to the Navy Program as a civilian and he reached out to me directly for advice as he was transitioning into his new role. I am saddened to hear of his passing. We are always compelled to say kind words when someone passes, but I can say without embellishment that Bill was truly a kind caring teammate and someone who was a pleasure to know. I am certain he is sorely missed because I who barely knew him recognize his generous spirit. What a loss for those with whom he was closest.

I met Bill in 1985, when he started at the Navy support contractor where I worked. We did not work together much, but he really knew his stuff and was always willing to help. He refused to take things too seriously, cracking us up regularly. We lost contact, particularly after he went to work for the Navy. The light in the world is diminished without you, my friend . . .

Since joining the Navy as a Civilian last year, I have been very fortunate and an honor to work with Bill on the Platform Services team. Bill was very supportive and always have our "back." Bill has been a great friend and co-worker. Rest in peace, Bill!

Bill was one of the best coworkers to have. Always willing to lend a hand with a smile on his face. He cared so deeply about others which was evident in the way he interacted with his coworkers. It is often said that it takes a village to raise a child. We were blessed to have the Sedlak’s as part of our village. Nil was a wonderful father of hi girls, a great cheered for all the kids in the neighborhood and a wonderful partner in encouraging the Omers to explore new ways of problem solving. Bill will be missed but I am sure he will live on in the memories of his daughters and neighborhood children, now adults. Sending love to Claire, Emily, Susan and Linda.

Bill was a rare combination of being passionate about his work and always willing to help. His practical minded approach was always a joy and greatly intensifies the degree to which he will be missed. Our sadness is tempered ever so slightly by memories of having Bill on our team.
