One to a heart attack, sudden and unannounced. The other to COVID, untimely, unfair, and devastating. I was pregnant when my sister died. And those events completely changed the trajectory of my life.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For a while, I looked like I was coping. I showed up at work, at social events, and kept showing up for my newborn. But inside, I felt completely disconnected\u2026 from others, from joy, and from everything I once loved doing. Even existing in that space came with overwhelming guilt.. For not being the friend, the partner and the mother I wanted to be. Grief felt like an endless, bottomless pit, and I was empty, lost, with no idea how to climb out of it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If that\u2019s where you are, this is for you.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As a certified grief coach, I\u2019ve now supported hundreds of other grievers over the years, who were stuck in that same pit. Today, I want to offer you the deeper truths of grief that no one prepares you for, show you what\u2019s actually going on underneath it all, and what might finally help.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">___<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">10 Truths About Grief You Deserve To Know<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">1. You are not broken.<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">What you&#8217;re feeling isn\u2019t wrong or crazy.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It may feel messy, confusing, overwhelmingly sad, numb, scary or even hopeless. You may notice physical symptoms like trouble sleeping (or sleeping too much), persistent fatigue, or even unexplained aches and pains. You may feel anxious, forgetful or unable to focus on things. But all of these reactions are a completely normal and human response to loss.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It\u2019s not a flaw. It&#8217;s your nervous system adapting to loss. What you need to move through these difficulties is support and compassion.. not more self-criticism, and definitely not a diagnosis.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Tip:<\/strong> When the self-judgment creeps in, try asking: <em>\u201cWhat if this is just grief, not a personal failure?\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">2. You are not behind.<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">When people start expecting you to \u201cbe better by now\u201d, it can make you feel like you\u2019re failing. But the truth is, grief doesn\u2019t follow a \u201cstandard timeline\u201d and it cannot be packed into neat linear stages. Every grief journey is complex and personal.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There is no \u201cshould\u201d about how you\u2019re supposed to feel, how long it should take, or what healing is supposed to look like.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">So let that desire to shift come from within, not from external pressure to be \u201cbetter\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Tip:<\/strong> Instead of asking \u201cHow long has it been?\u201d ask \u201cWhat do I feel ready for, and what kind of support do I need right now?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">3. This isn\u2019t just in your head&nbsp;<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">When you experience a loss this big, your nervous system registers it as a threat and shifts into survival mode to protect you.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That\u2019s why grief isn\u2019t just emotional. It lives in your body, your mind, and your spirit. You might feel anxious and hyper-alert\u2026 or completely numb and exhausted. It can affect your ability to rest, focus, or even do the simplest things.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And here\u2019s what no one tells you: <strong>Talking about it \u2014 while helpful and necessary \u2014 often isn\u2019t enough.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Even if you\u2019ve tried therapy or support groups, you might still feel stuck. That\u2019s not a failure. It\u2019s because talking alone doesn\u2019t teach your nervous system how to <em>release<\/em> survival patterns or <em>rebuild<\/em> a sense of safety and belonging.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Tip:<\/strong><strong><br><\/strong> If you notice yourself feeling shut down or overwhelmed, start with a small regulating practice like the <em>physiological sigh<\/em> \u2014 two short inhales through your nose, followed by one long exhale through your mouth. This simple breath can help signal to your body that it\u2019s safe to soften, even just a little.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">4. Feeling joy doesn\u2019t mean you\u2019re forgetting<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Often feelings of joy after grief come with a lot of guilt. But here\u2019s the thing, laughter isn\u2019t disloyal. Smiling again doesn\u2019t mean the love has faded. It means you\u2019re still alive, and want to honor your life too. You don\u2019t owe anyone a tidy version of your pain<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Anytime I appeared put together or functioning, someone would say, \u201cYou\u2019re so strong\u2026 you\u2019re doing so much better.\u201d Most grievers hear this. And slowly, we start to believe that strength means hiding our grief.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But performance is not healing. Pretending that the pain doesn\u2019t exist makes others comfortable but it disconnects <em>you<\/em> from your truth.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Tip<\/strong>: Let your grief breathe. If someone can\u2019t hold space for it, that\u2019s a reflection of their limits, not yours.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">6. You might lose other connections<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We live in a society that is largely uncomfortable with the topic of death and grief. Some people will not know what to say. Other will disappear. Some will say the wrong things. And it hurts. Navigating changing social dynamics can feel overwhelming, especially when you&#8217;re already carrying so much.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Even the most well-meaning people might not have the capacity or knowledge you need in this season of life. You deserve support that feels safe, steady, and nonjudgmental.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Tip:<\/strong> Consider working with a professional who can be a reliable anchor, someone trained to hold space for your grief, consistently and without discomfort.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">7. Time doesn\u2019t heal, safety does<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We\u2019re told that grief heals with time. But for many, time just adds more sorrow\u2026 more guilt\u2026<br>Because every day feels like it pulls you further away from the life you shared.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Healing begins when your nervous system feels safe enough to actually process the loss,to integrate the grief, to release the guilt and to find belonging again.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That\u2019s why nervous system tools, co-regulation, and the right kind of support matter more than the passage of time.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Tip:<\/strong> Begin by learning what safety feels like in your body, whether it is nature, music, movement, stillness or support and do more of that.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">8. Grief changes you<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Grief can change your perspective, priorities, beliefs and relationships. And that\u2019s okay.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There is a version of you still waiting to be met. One who carries this grief with both strength and softness. One who can hold love and loss together.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Tip:<\/strong> It can feel uncomfortable, scary and unknown. That doesn\u2019t mean evolution to another identity is wrong.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">9. You don\u2019t have to(and probably shouldn\u2019t) do this alone.<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">What\u2019s harder than grief is doing it alone. Even when people are around, it can feel deeply isolating if they don\u2019t know how to meet you in your pain.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You deserve steady, safe support. Co-regulation helps your nervous system settle, and structured grief-aware guidance helps you make sense of the chaos. You don\u2019t need to figure this out alone.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Leaning on the right kind of support isn\u2019t giving up or weakness. It\u2019s a powerful choice in this season.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Tip:<\/strong> Look for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.transformingthroughgrief.com\/coaching\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">http:\/\/grief-aware, nervous-system-safe support<\/a> that can hold you through this season.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">10. The love and longing always stays but peace, connection and even joy return when your nervous system begins to allow it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong><br>Tip: <\/strong>Healing isn\u2019t erasing the pain. It\u2019s building enough capacity to hold more than the hurt.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Remember, healing is possible<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-group is-layout-constrained wp-block-group-is-layout-constrained\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You don\u2019t have to let go of the love to move forward.<strong> <\/strong>That\u2019s something I wish someone had told me early on.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I healed and reclaimed joy, not by forgetting, but by learning how to live with the love and the loss, side by side.
