Papa Bona ;

Ton amie, Emerence.

Bona,
I was in shock when I learnt of your passing to eternity. I guess we have to accept it as God knows better. You have gone to join the Lord and I believe that you are in good hands. You were a friend, a gentleman and a scholar. You were a traditionalist and fought hard to keep our Bamileke culture alive. I applaud you for that. We will sorely miss you forever. Gone too soon my friend... My heartfelt condolences to your family. May your Soul RIP!

Dear Bona,
It only took me a short time knowing you to want to be your personal friend. So easy and enriching to talk to you sometime for hours. I will miss our intelligent conversations. May our Ancestors eternal company be a peaceful one for you.
RIP my friend.

Dear brother and friend, you walked this earth as you left us, fast and efficient.
Your engagement and militancy knew no bounds to improve humanity.

I enjoyed our long conversations. You were as versatile and fluent in as many languages as comfortable with any worthy topic from family, culture to politics and everything in between.

Rest easy my friend, you will forever be missed. I pray your family finds solace in the joy you spread.

Bonaventure Ouabo, affectionately known as “Bona” was born on May 7, 1954 in Baham, Cameroon. He passed away on July 10, 2020 at the age of 66, following a 4-week battle with COVID-19 at MedStar Southern Maryland Hospital Center, located in the state of Maryland.

Papa Bona graduated from Baham High school and obtained his Bachelor’s and graduate degrees in Linguistics from the University of Yaounde, Cameroon. He went on to teach languages at several high schools throughout Cameroon, including English, French and Spanish. He had a passion for learning and teaching languages which he pursued throughout his entire life. He taught English to young Cameroonians aspiring to study abroad. He taught young Cameroonians “Homala” (our local dialects) with the purpose of keeping this endangered dialect alive. Once he immigrated to the United States, his passion for languages turned into his bread and butter as he served as a Spanish-English medical interpreter in various health care and legal systems. In addition to languages, he loved the Bamileke culture and traditions. He guest-starred on Cameroonian talk shows preaching the need to promote and maintain our sacred tradition. He exhibited Cameroonian art and fashion at various African events and wore it with pride and love. Papa Bona was also passionate about Cameroon politics, and fought hard for the legitimate practice of democracy and freedom of speech in Cameroon as evidenced by his activism in various organizations.

Happy heavenly birthday dad. Words can not express how much I miss you. I miss your smile, your jokes, your kind touch. I still have several things I wish I had told you before you left us. But I know you already know, and you are watching over us now. Love you so much…

Dear Mister Ouabo,

Today it's been two years since you left us for heaven. We miss you very much, but we know that :

1. We must accept what we cannot prevent,
2. It is death that gives meaning to life,
3. Everything God does is good,
4. Everything that pleases Man also pleases God,
5. The dead are not dead according to Birago Diop
6. The important thing is the essential, and the essential thing is that the Lord forgives you your sins and puts you at his right hand, that your soul rests in peace and that the land of your ancestors that you loved be definitively and eternally light.

For my part, before the end of this year 2022, I will go to Cameroon to offer as a gift to our CES of Bandjoun in Poumegne, today high school of Bandjoun, a Library named "Space of Education and Culture", "Au Velours de Soie d'Hortensia" in abbreviation EEC-AVSH. You will be honored by your most beautiful portrait in a white tuxedo and black bow tie, and it is your nephew Edmond who will be the godfather of the place.

I send you a big kiss and see you next year.
I loved you, I love you and I will love you forever.

Your little Hortensia from Paris.

Cher Mister Ouabo,

Remembering Bonaventure Ouabo:

Tonton Bona, as he was fondly called, was someone who embraced life to the fullest. Despite French being his first international language, he was also fluent in English and Spanish. He was deeply admired for his intellect, charm and charisma. His magnetic personality opened doors for him, and great opportunities in life. He loved life: his personal, social and professional connections were not only broad, but deeper in every sense of the word. He loved and lived life to the fullest.

His favorite pastime was horticulture, African cultures and arts collection.

May his Soul Rest In Peace!

Dad I miss you. Today after difficulty counseling a Spanish speaking patient at work, I wished I spoke Spanish like you. I remembered how upset you had been when in 4ème I optedto take German classes instead of Spanish. We had some good laughs about that. Rest In Peace daddy.
