Obituary:
BRIGHAM CITY – Boyd D. Bryner built big things; from gauges for the Space Shuttle to a large and loving family. He passed away on August 9, 2013 at the age of 78.
An accomplished engineer, Boyd led a team at Thiokol that helped propel astronauts out of Earth's orbit. He had great passion for his work and loved his colleagues, considering them his second family. After 38 years in the Test Area, he reluctantly retired in 1999, temporarily returning eight years later as a consultant to work on the Aries project at the request of the company.
Boyd created as much at home as he did at work. He designed and constructed his house in Brigham City and often helped family and friends with similar projects. He passed along his can-do spirit to his children, teaching them that problems large and small can be solved with careful reasoning, persistence, and patience.
He enjoyed a good bison burger and a well stocked salad bar, old westerns and long drives. Beyond engineering, he loved to talk about politics and health. He had a booming voice and spoke with purpose and good humor. He was an accomplished, professionally trained singer with a beautiful baritone voice.
Boyd was born on October 3, 1934 in Cedar City, Utah to Irvin and Lola Belle DeMille Bryner, fourth of their five children. He grew up in Overton, NV, where he watched and later helped his father run power lines through the desert. He served an LDS mission in New England and Canada from 1956-58. Afterward, he attended the University of Utah graduating in 1960 with a degree in electrical engineering. He married Ione Mitchell that same year, with whom he had three children, Becky Jones, Earl Bryner (Randee) and David Bryner (Shelley). He and Ione later divorced but remained friends.
On July 18, 1975, he married Merrilee Fisher Wills, welcoming her children, Bonnie Hall (Bert), Matthew, Andrea Clark (Trent), Jenness Wood (Randle) and Jason (Melanie) into his home and heart. They added one last daughter to their family two years later when Leah (Matt) was born. Boyd and Merrilee recently celebrated their 38th anniversary.
Boyd is preceded in death by his son Matthew, his parents, and his siblings: Dwane and Elaine (Hale.) He is survived by his wife and eight children, his sister Barbara (McDonald) of Heber City, UT, his brother Clair of Las Vegas, NV, 25 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be Friday, August 16, 2013 at 1:00 p.m. at Myers Mortuary Chapel, 205 S. 100 E., Brigham City, Utah.
Friends may call on Thursday from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. and on Friday from 12:00 to 12:40 p.m. at the Mortuary.
Interment will be in the Brigham City Cemetery.
