MY ROLE MODEL
My Grandmother introduced me to Mrs. Martin. She made beautiful dresses for her. I loved hearing her life stories and her infectious laughter. Mrs. Bradell never knew the impact that she had on my life, although I did tell her a few times. I would like to share with you a story of kindness and compassion about this sweet lady. In 1992 my Grandfather passed. I was living in another state at the time and needed to get to Georgia as soon as possible. I did not have time to buy a suit for my son who was in the 5th grade. Mrs. Bradell told me that she could take one of Grandad's suits and alter it to fit my son. I didn't think that it would be possible. Impossible is not a word that was in her vocabulary. She did an absolutely amazing job and it looked as if the suit had been specially made for my son. Well actually it had been thanks to her. She did this in one days time. She would not allow me to give her any money at all. There will always be a speacial place in my heart for her. To Mr. Charlie Frank and family, my thoughts and prayers are with you all.
The first time I met Bradell Martin was when Vernard handed me his phone and told me to talk to his mother. When she figured out I was dating her son she pretty much told me I should leave him at the side of the road where I found him. ;-)
Later after Vernard and I got engaged we were at mom and pops for Thanksgiving or something and Vernard and Vincent were having there typical competition/conversation when mom turned to me and said I’ll give you the other one for free. ;-)
Then at my bridal shower Bradell Martin’s words of wisdom she wrote down, which was one of thigs all the guest did, included “Stay away from dieters and Keep some cash but other folks money spends better than yours.”
Therefore at Mama Martin’s memorial I plan to wear something colorful to honor her unique charm.
