The legend of Bret trevethan
May 30, 2021
I met Bret when I was 19, working at cafe vacca Matta in foreshore , Cape Town, 1999.
what a life force , what a character , what a dancer! . A kind, gentle soul with an amazing smile and laugh . A good soul , quality person . We lost touch for many years and reconnected on our respective journeys , walking this rough road together . Sharing our triumphs, fears and hopes .
bret was there for me and I for him . If we were having shit times we lifted each other up .
he was so so brave and faced his illness with dignity , determination and a will to survive that I’ve never seen . He gave me courage to fight back and fight harder .
buddy , I’m glad you’re not in pain anymore . I’m glad you are happy with Jesus and not sick anymore . In a way, I’m envious !
im glad your family know how much you loved them , leaving your legacy of tenacity and determination behind , so that keeks can be forever inspired by her beautiful father and Leeanne can take comfort in the fact that she was your last , forever love .
man, I miss our chats and bitching and moaning about treatment. I miss waking to your messages - your last one being “ let’s dust this place and go drink cocktails on an island til the end “
my friend you are forever in my heart and I have no doubt when the time is right for my transition you’ll be waiting for me Pina colada In hand . Til then , rest easy , rest gently my brother in Christ .
you are forever loved .
all my love, Dom xxx
