Good ole Skip. I miss our adventures in 3 d printing and making weird models. He was one of my very best friends.
It was odd we met at a CNC conference as we both were interested in building automated equipment and we spent hours on the phone and in person learning. Searching the Internet to find solutions. He was truly a kindred spirit. Albeit sometimes enraged if things didn't go well...

I hope we meet again

So weird! Yesterday 1/18/23 we found Skip's old flip flops he used to wear when he visited us at FOY Spa. Cleaning behind the chairs and sacred cobwebs. He must have been having a good laugh at us as I said "well guess he will not need these anymore." Skip used to love sitting in the hot tub and gabbing with strangers.
Love and Hugs to you Jo and Skip too!

It has already been three years since Skip passed away. We have been dealing with world wide pandemic for two years now. Skip, you really know when to exit! We all miss you a lot, especially your smile and funny antics. My sister Jo still cries over missing you terribly and I cry with her.  Jo and I sent Gizmo looking for you this past November, the deed was hard to do but the time was right for Gizmo. Hope you two found each other in the great beyond. Sending LOVE and HUGS to JoAnn and all those who are missing you.

Skip will truly be missed. He was quite a joker and often made me laugh. I remember him and Jo Ann as part of my fond memories of Hawaii. I remember Skip and Jo Ann meeting each other at the hospital. I also thank them both for making me the maid of honor at their wedding. We all had a great time. Skip will always be remembered with fondness. Peace and blessings, Delyth

The Marines did a moving funeral for Skip on May 30 at Arlington National Cemetary. They did the flag folding ceremony and 21 gun salute and pastor said fitting words about Skip (Bruce) Koons and all very well organized. They were very gentle with my sister JoAnn (Skip's wife) and everyone else attending. It was a moving to tears ceremony and we are all glad we attended (Annie & Sherry & Lisa).

Skip20, although I did not know you long, I and so many others enjoyed your YouTube videos, postings, and the many conversations we had on the cars, their parts, and the back stories, of those experiences unique to DIY auto builders ..... Rest in peace in the Final Garage until God's Son calls you to shine your headlights again (John 5:28,29)... Together then, we may travel about with new and different ways we can not even now imagine... Regards, recog......

I will definitely miss this dude. I was looking forward to seeing him this year but God had a different plan. I always thought of him as the "older cool guy". Always coming to the office on his motorcycle, smoking a cigarette. Rough around the edges but a completely endearing soul. The ultimate handyman.
He loved animals and sometimes he would bring the "dogchild" to the office. That was always a special event.
The love and friendship that Jo Ann and Skip had was inspiring. I remember thinking "I want to have a connection like that with my future husband".
My prayers are constantly going up for Jo Ann and the family. Thank you God for Skips life.

Good Ole Skip HERE.. He would always answer the phone as Skip here.. SO that was what I called him... We had many many early morning chats and visits to work on projects over Skype. Attend shows and tinkers for hours. I 3d printed so many parts for his projects so he wouldnt have to learn how to use the software.
Gizmo was always on his mind and I guess went everywhere he did.. I know he would not book a room in a hotel unless he could also bring Gizmo.
His crazy add-ons sometimes drove me nuts trying to make them work. but as soon as he bought something he would disassemble it to make improvements spending hours on the YouTube researching anything to make it better...even if it was working perfectly.
I will surely miss Skip HERE... we had many good times. A true friend,

Skip was my son-in-law, and he really loved my daughter, Jo Ann and Gizmo, their pet dog. He was a good and kind man. He loved working on vehicles, repairing them. He turned their garage into a Work Shop. He often took trips to the junk yard to pick up parts for repairing vehicles or other items. He even created vehicles on his own, one of which was a 3-wheeler with a dog seat that Gizmo rode in on several road trips with Skip. That was a real sight!
He also loved chocolate cake that I baked for him.
He would pick up a Roasted Chicken at Cosco and deliver to me. One day I was not home, but he left it at my door on the front porch, then called me to let me know, "There's a 'bird' on my front porch!"
His death was so sudden, and he left this world much too soon. He will be greatly missed.

Memories of Skip (Bruce) Koons:
Skip was an excellent singer even ran his own Karoke biz in his younger days. His favorite Karoke song "I Did It My Way" is a testament to his philosophy of life.
Remember singing with him at FOY Karoke in CA and Bullfeathers in Knoxville TN our "Country Roads" duet. Only Skip could get me up to sing!
Skip had a certain charm when he found himself in a pickle. One time he was driving a carload of all women thru Parker AZ all directing him and he ran a stop sign in his frustration. Zap the blue light special was pulling him over. The cop walked up and stared in the window and Skip pointed to all us with his crooked smile. The cop said never mind pal no ticket this time and went on his way. He was lucky like that...
So many Skipee stories to tell will have to return with more later. You will be missed!

Skip was and always will be my best friend!
So many road trips and building kit cars and motorcycles/VW trikes, we never took time away from it. We'd go to car shows together, Pull-A-Part (You'd think we lived there), Home Depot, Harbour Freight, and down to bullfeathers bar
Skip and I got into building CNC machines and 3D printers and Skip always had ideas that he wanted to do. He had some good ones and some off the wall ones, but that was what made him, him.
Anytime I needed something, he would stop what he was doing and help me out, as I did for him.
I still hear him calling me "The Edster"... We would talk on the phone for hours...
I'm going to miss him a lot. He wasn't supposed to leave yet, we had made plans to see each other this summer.
Thank you Skip for always being there and for being my best friend. You are truly missed and I know that you are in a much better place. One day I will see you again, and we'll resume what we had!!!
Your best friend forever,
Eddie

Skip was my brother in-law but he really felt like another brother to me. He really loved my sister Jo, adored her and was always good to her and our family. He was a good guy and had much to teach about living life and all his mechanical and technical projects. When I left TN just before Christmas he was feeling sick and I was worried for him. Little did we know our good-byes and HUGS and love yous would be our last... He is missed by Sherry & Annie & Lisa here in So CAL at FOY Spa where he loved sitting in Hot Tubs and talking with new friends. He was way to young to leave this planet. Love to Jo and rest of his family and friends. May he be at peace and pain free. See him on the other side.

Skip's Last Days - Written By Jo Ann Koons

January 22, 2019

Skip’s death (Friday January 18, 2019) was sudden & quick in its way.

He had been suffering for over the last 3 months with the persistent cough that differed from the regular smoker’s cough.  He was a little stubborn but a real trooper handling the activities of daily living while getting slowly weaker.

We may have had more time to love and communicate and live life a bit more if the cancer had been recognized earlier, in time to treat with chemo torture.  He had small cell lung cancer, (plus pneumonia), which can metastasize quickly, but is treatable if found early.  However, small cell tends to return within months, to organs such as the brain leading to an undesirable death.

In the ER before admission while struggling for breath he told me “I do not want to be a vegetable” (which incidentally he detested all veggies except green beans).

The back story:

October, November, December 2018 Skip developed a persistent cough different from the regular smoker’s cough (in hind sight an ominous cough).  Towards the last few weeks he was having shortness of breath.  He was regularly seeing various doctors:  Family Practice, endocrinologist for thyroid and diabetes management, vascular surgeon follow-ups for leg stents. In December Skip saw the Ear Nose Throat doctor that performed a laryngoscopy procedure and the biopsy specimen showed no cancer.

Undeterred, the next step was the pulmonologist (lung doc) with delays of cancelled appointments, the bronchoscopy was scheduled for January 17th.  He went to Urgent care clinics and received nebulizer treatments, then Monday January 7th went to the ER at 2am.  Had another breathing treatment and was sent home at 4am.  He kind of rallied for a day or two, but was getting weaker.  [with the cough came headaches, neck and back aches, and inability to sleep-major torture].  He dutifully followed all the medical regimen of pills (prednisone, antibiotics, inhalers, and daily pills) with no improvement.  Friday January 11th he was having lower extremity swelling, the same day he visited the VA doc who mentioned it to Skip, who then showed me Saturday.  He went to Urgent care clinic Sunday January 13th.  The Nurse Practitioner sent him to the ER.  In major respiratory distress he was admitted to ICU for treatment and monitoring.  Monday January 14th, he required intubation (insertion of a breathing tube).  Placed on a Propofol drip for sedation, and suctioning of the lung congestion (Pneumonia had developed), he was surviving.  By Wednesday January 16th he had the bronchoscopy that brought the diagnosis of small cell cancer.  After the bronch procedure he required maximum ventilatory support.  Thursday January 17th the propofol drip was suspended but he was not waking up or responding.  His kidneys were failing, so dialysis was scheduled for Friday morning January 18th.  He did not improve during the night, and lost the gag reflex.  Friday morning he was too weak for the dialysis and I was urgently called in at 10am.

The Last Day:

Skip was not breathing on his own, not peeing, not responding, no gag reflex, blood pressure was dropping.  At 11am in the hospital room with my sister in law, Charlene, doctor and nurse Angie all was reviewed and discussed.  Chaplain Daniel Hicks came in consoled us and said a very nice blessing for a good man.  At 11:30 am Skip’s sister Lucy was able to talk in his ear via cell phone for love and good byes.  At 11:39 am a bolus of Morphine was given.  Then the breathing tube was removed completely by 11:50am.  Skip stopped breathing before 12noon, and was in asystole (heart straight-line) quickly.  Many tears and hugs.

So that is pulling a “Skippy”, 6 days in ICU, then off to heaven, free of his tortured body.

He was able to donate his corneas to the TN organ donor organization.

To be cremated.  We’ll all meet in May or June to take his ashes to Arlington Cemetery Columbarium in Wash DC.

Memories of Skip - Written by Gabe Beck

January 22, 2019

Skip was a good person with a unique sense of humor and I consider myself lucky to have known Skip.

Skip was particularly gifted mechanically and I would often seek Skips help with various projects, such as plumbing, furniture assembly, building a kiosk or anything construction or mechanical in nature, since this is not my strong-point. Skip had a passion for learning and understanding how things work.He did not always rely on instructions and could see a bunch of parts and visualize assemblies and their purpose in the end product. He was never afraid to jump right in and just start putting pieces together. We didn’t always use all the parts and often ended up with something unique at the end of the process that may not have been built as designed but always functional, working and sometimes an upgrade. We built a kiosk together some years ago.For me, this seemed a daunting task with so many parts and assemblies.I started opening boxes, pulling instructions and inventorying parts to try and understand how each piece functions.Skips jumps right in and starts putting things together and just says this is a giant erector set.I just played along and let Skip do his thing. When we were done, we had a setup that was nothing like the picture, but none-the-less, an end product was created that was completely functional and worked just as well as the planned design would have yielded. Not to mention, he probably built it in less than half the time and we had lots of spare parts left over.

Skip was never afraid to push a button and not just Jo Ann’s buttons. One time, Skip was helping us get our new office location setup and came across an obscure button in the backroom. His curiosity took over and he pressed that button wondering what would happen only to find out that button was the silent alarm.Needless to say, we found out the silent alarm worked when the police arrived.

These are just a couple of examples of Skips skills, generosity and friendship.Skip was always willing to help and never expected much in return, except for a good meal or steak on occasion. Skip had some rough edges and we are very different people, but when I got to know him, I learned he was a truly nice person with a good heart along with a brutally honest sense of humor as well as someone who enjoyed the small pleasures in life.I always enjoyed Skips company and I will miss him, but I am glad that I had an opportunity to know him and call him my friend.

The Best Uncle

January 21, 2019

I had so many good times with my Uncle Bruce. I didn’t get to spend a whole lot of time with him since we had so many miles between us, but the times I got to spend with him were always so fun! My cheeks always hurt from him making me laugh so hard, from his jokes, to his wise cracks, to making funny faces at me. We had a blast in Las Vegas hitting up all the buffets and eating our way through Vegas. Disney World was amazing and out of this world, it truly was a great family vacation where memories were made. And, all our family trips back to Virginia for anniversary parties, family reunions, and so much more – Bruce always made it fun and entertaining for me! I admired how “handy” he was, he was a “Jack-of-all-Trade” always fixing, building, replacing anything and everything. I loved how creative he was from building and rebuilding bikes/trailers/cars to his engraving business. And of course I will never forget his dress of style, I just loved his variety of Hawaiian/flowery shirts (and don't forget the flip flops) - you certainly knew when he walked into a room! He was an awesome Uncle and I’m truly going to miss him.
