If you can remember us only with tears
Then don’t remember us at all.
If you can remember us with
laughter…
Then remember us always.

Patsy loved Moyie Community Affairs, gardening, knitting and her much loved Quilting Group in Moyie and of course her family.

Bud’s life.

(born Vanderhoof 1926)

(into heaven Prince George 2019.)

Buds Parents were married in Prince George on March 22, 1922 - Douglas Donovan Ellis (Don) and Sarah Jeanette Steel (Nettie) settled in Vanderhoof after WW 1. Don had been a sniper in the 47th infantry battalion. After the war Don and Nettie took up Homestead under the soldiers settlement plan. They had two sons Douglas Kenneth (Bus) and Cecil George (Bud). Times were very tough in early 1920s with extremely severe winters.  The family had some good times but eventually had to give up the Homestead and move to Kelowna. Don worked many logging  jobs, trucking jobs and as a  maintenance man for the city of Kelowna. Good fortune came his way when he was hired as a Game Warden in 1939 and was stationed in the city of Kamloops. Bus and Bud finished school in Kamloops both had several jobs and later Bus first and Bud next joined the Navy. Both served on active duty in the North Atlantic on Corvettes. Bud was very fortunate and was hired by the BC game department April 1, 1947 as a predatory animal hunter. Bud’s job was to look after ranchers and farmers complaints of cougars bears wolves etc. Bud enjoyed this time from 1947 until 1950 working closely with his father in Kamloops. Don transferred to Kelowna in the  spring of 1950 and retired in 1965. Bud’s dad died in Kelowna in 1977. In 1952 Bud transferred to Pouce Coupe  and soon met Patricia Gregg in Dawson Creek. Bud wasted no time and married Patsy, he always said it was -40 with a foot of snow that April 1 wedding day but from his grin and the fact it was April fools day the kids were never really sure. Three sons followed in rapid succession; Donovan, Patrick and Douglas. Bud and Patsy had 10 good years in the North again doing predator control, mostly wolves in those days and his territory stretched over 600 miles all the way to the Yukon border. In 1962 Bud packed up the family and took a transfer to Cranbrook. His predator control responsibilities again included a lot of Bear and Cougar complaints. He had replaced the retiring Game Warden in Cranbrook so this posting also included more enforcement and conservation work. Bud was busy and thoroughly enjoyed exploring his beloved East Kootenay back country and getting to know the local outdoor enthusiasts. A move to Moyie lake in 1980 saw  Bud commuting to Creston more and handling complaints of Elk and Deer damaging orchards. The Creston commutes were usually to conduct PR work trying to keep people happy and Bud rose to the task as a then skilled Conversation Officer. After 37 years of the best job really anyone could ever ask for, Bud retired in 1984 at Moyie lake where he and Patsy became very active volunteering to support many community improvement projects. After over 25 years in their Moyie dream home Bud and Patsy moved to Joseph Creek Village in Cranbrook. Bud had a fair bit of heart trouble starting in 2002 and went through heart surgery at foothills hospital in Calgary getting a new valve and a single bypass in 2006. His heart held up well through many years of cutting, hauling and heating the Moyie home with wood and in the end it was really just old age that caused him to breath in one more time than he breathed out.

At the time of his passing , with family by his side in Prince George, Patsy still lives fully independently in their Joseph Creek home. Patsy will be 90 in February.

Thinking of you Bud as the 4 year anniversary of your passing approaches us this Saturday.
Going for a drive in the woods today- be looking for a nice two point, a willow grouse, a dry snag within winch distance or one of the multitudes of things and memories you helped create for us down here while you were alive!
Say hi to momma Patsy and look forward to giving you both big hugs in our new bodies one day.

Thinking of my Mamma all day yesterday. Wondering what it is like to be in her new body, mansion and marriage? Does it even really register that she would have turned 93 had she remained with us down here? My mother certainly loved her family and I am sure still does. Wonder how this could change now that Patsy fully understands True Love? Things we truly can only imagine…
Love you mom and dad with all my heart, always will and look forward to the day we meet up again!

Patsy and Bud’s memorial stone was placed into their permanent family plot at the Moyie Historic Cemetery yesterday. Some of their ashes were scattered there too as well as other scenic Moyie sites. Their remaining ashes will be distributed to any/all family and friends interested in helping us distribute them in ways that continue to honour them and allow their memories to live on!

The song posted on mom’s page was played to her ( by her new friend Shar) in Invermere as she left us Easter Monday. Mom was a good Irish Protestant Gregg gal and it just makes sense this tune by Celtic Women would be part of God’s Grace leading Patsy home. Her first sibling to leave us was Danny and I’m sure the pipes were playing too the day he left us in 1971!

Happy Birthday Mr. Ellis,
I'll always remember the day you asked me to go for a ride with you on your job. Stopped at the end of Elizebeth Lake and watched a Moose and her baby for at least 45 minutes, i really enjoyed that day

I had the great pleasure of getting to know Bud and work with him as a young Conservation Officer just posted to Fernie BC back in 1980. Bud had my greatest admiration, not only for his tremendous knowledge of wildlife but for the incredible quality of character he possessed. Bud was a true gentlemen in every sense of the word and to know him was a great privilege and one of life's gifts.

Regards to all of Bud's family.

Aunt Patsy, Donovan, Patrick and Douglas - I only just heard about Uncle Bud's passing - so sad. But Bud lived a long wonderful life, including being married seemingly forever to Aunt Patsy and raising three wonderful boys/men.

I remember fondly times spent out at Moyie when I was a kid when my parents Irene and Gord Fontaine would take my sister Janet and I out for the day or overnight. I was always fascinated by the "stuff" in Bud's garage in Cranbrook or in nooks and crannies out at the Moyie cabin. Things like you see at historic sites! I also got to feed a baby cougar!

I was also so glad that my kids Michael and Kristen were able to meet Bud and Patsy when we were on our 2006 BC/Alberta trip.

Lauren and I send our deepest condolences to you and to all of Bud's extended family.

Some good advice

October 19, 2019
Bud and I were both members of the Kimberley Trap and Skeet Club.  I am a one-eyed guy and found it hard to follow the bird sometimes.  Bud told me ''Just lead it by 2 feet and you will hit it every time!''  He was absolutely right and that's the way I shoot.  Every time I raise my shotgun to shoot, I think of Bud's advice.
I won the Trophy at the Club by following his instructions...thanks, Bud.
