Port of Egypt
May 26, 2022
I was wondering a few weeks ago what happened to my fathers friend John Thompson. I was headed out to Greenport for a wedding and remembered that when I was 9 or 10, we went fishing with Mr. Thompson (wasn't allowed to call him Mr. Thompson...it was John or JT back then which I thought was super cool of an adult to allow that) out of some place called Port of Egypt. I always found it odd that Egypt had a port in Long Island. Anyway...I was sad to discover that John passed away in 2021. I also lost my father in October of 2021 but felt comforted that my father had some friends up there (JJ, JT...) They all knew each other from 84 Engine. My father was a new lieutenant and after bouncing around for awhile landed at 84 engine. I was lucky to join my father on a few ride alongs in the early 80's. These were some of my fondest memories.. Car fire "down in the hole" which meant under the west side highway, fire with a second source. My father always said stay in the truck but one day I decided to get out and meet the neighborhood kids while dad the the guys were battling a top floor job blowing out 3 windows. The local boys didn't like me very much but this man mountain of a chauffer came to my rescue with a hydrant wrench in hand. He said something like, "you'll have to get through me before you get to him." Good times.
Anyway, back to fishing. We went out of Port of Egypt a few times with JT (once with Tim). One memorable trip was with Capt. JJ and JT. It was summer time and we were fishing around. We found the fish and stayed on the fish. We caught a lot of big hungry bluefish. My father told John he would sell the fish and John thought it was a waste of time because nobody wanted big bluefish. Anyway, my father went to White Plains, NY, opened up his cooler and told people to name their price, Most of the fish went for 5 dollars each. After that, JT would take the bluefish to the 161st street neighborhood where he would sell the fish without any problem.
OK, back to my weird coincidence of going to a wedding in Greenport, looking up the news about JT and some vauge memory of some place called Port of Egypt. So my wife and I get out there and we went to one of those wineries. My wife saw that I was google mapping someplace called Port of Egypt which was close by. It was actually closer then we thought The wedding reception was a block away from Port of Egypt and the brunch the next day was in the Port of Egypt property A Lure... I'm not exactly a person that believes in signs and the spirit world communicating but I couldn't help but think how coincidental the whole thing was.
Anyway, one of the pictures that was posted had an old chimney in the background of JT coming in from a day of fishing. I remembered that vaguely as well. The morning after the wedding I went down to the dock at Port of Egypt and recreated exactly where the picture was taken from. It was coming in from the left side with the sand bar on the port side of the boat. The chimney stack is still there so it made it easy. (Tim will remember that I think).
Anyway, I'm sorry that JT is not with us anymore. It's been tough the last six months missing my dad as well. I found peace at Port of Egypt and some closure as well. It was good therapy for me to spend some time there and think about the good times. I would like to thank Tim and Laurie for sharing your dad with some others. It made my childhood memorable and happy.
