On November 14th, 2018, Carey DeGeer-Cowles passed away at the age of 58 after battling pancreatic cancer. Carey was born to Gerald and Anne DeGeer, and grew up in Wenonah, New Jersey, where she made lifelong friends and many lasting memories. A 1978 graduate of Gateway Regional High School, her softball team won the State Championship that year. She excelled at theater in her early years and continued to perform at Woodbury Sketch Club as an adult. Following high school, Carey earned a B.A. in English and Communications at the University of Delaware. She worked a number of writing and editing jobs before serving as a managing editor of the publication “Caring for the Ages.” at Elsevier.

Carey was a bright, shining light to everyone she encountered. She had a wonderful sense of humor and always made sure that people felt happy, comfortable, and welcomed in her presence. She loved her two sons, Evan and Jeremy, dearly, as well as her niece Shannon Marcussen. She expects them all to follow the examples she set for compassion, empathy, and kindness. Carey always stood up for what she believed in and encouraged others to do the same.

She will be buried privately at Steelmantown Cemetery, a green burial preserve, where she will rest among the trees. Family, friends, and all who knew and loved her are invited to her memorial services, which will be held on Saturday, November 17th from 6 to 8 pm at Fertig Funeral Home, 63 N Main St, Mullica Hill, NJ

In lieu of flowers, Carey requested that charitable contributions be made to “Doctors Without Borders,” “Furrever Friends pet rescue of Woodbury,” “Animal Friends,” or any other pet-related charity of your choice.
