I remember Uncle Carl as that quiet member of our family who always seemed to be busy making sure we were all comfortable and taken care of.
For years, Aunt Hermine would lead her sisters in preparing the holiday fruit cake. When we sadly lost Aunt Hermine, Uncle Carl started sending fruit cake. Although the cakes were not as good as Aunt Hermine's, it was a beautiful gesture!

I loved Uncle Carl . He was always there for me at the right time and in special ways. I think he taught me the gift of quietly understanding a persons need and providing the right the right thing at the right time. He was a strong influence in who I am as a person. His greatest gift to me.

Uncle Carl was a great man. Very giving and selfless and always put others before himself. He helped to make my childhood special. He is greatly missed.

Uncle Carl you are forever in my heart. Since I was a child you were always there for me and I will always remember you unselfish generosity. My fondest memory will always be "the watermelon". If it wasn't for those darn jug handles and circles in New Jersey that watermelon would have made it back to Long Island.

I write this for my mom (Elaine Lowe)...
You were the best brother-in-law. I miss your company. I keep your and Hermine's picture on my nightstand so I'm always reminded of the love you both shared.

Uncle Carl...I am saddened to just find out that you have transitioned over. I am blessed to have been named after you, by my father, your brother Lorenzo!. Im also glad that we spoke when Lorenzo came to visit me in Maryland. I know the two of you are in the Lord's care now. May the Lord keep your family strong. Peace.

My dad was known for his strong opinions and certainty they were always right. His efforts to make sure his views became mine would turn into what felt like endless lectures to young me. I often foolishly wished he would just lash out at me with violence and get my torture over with. Thankfully he never did.

In the last few months of his life, when a disagreement between Dad and adult me was about to escalate, he would unexpectedly surrender and comically say…”Whatever.” He’d let the argument go and move on with no animosity at all. Whenever it happened I would quietly laugh at myself and at this very different him.

I have come to believe it was not by chance that we got a final opportunity to re-write the dynamics of our father-daughter relationship. To this day, everytime I hear or say the word “ whatever” I hear the humor in his voice and I find myself smiling. I never could have imagined a lifetime of disputes would turn into the warmest of memories to be cherished always.
