CARRIE ELIZABETH WARD HOLSTON

Mrs. Carrie Elizabeth Ward Holston was born February 8, 1957, in Birmingham, Alabama, the fourth child of Cleveland and Eula Ward. She accepted Christ at an early age and united with Macedonia Missionary Baptist Church, Ensley.

Carrie attended Birmingham Public Schools, and graduated from Wenonah High School in 1975. With her desire to be of service to others, she continued her education at Lawson State Community College and Bessemer State Technical College, earning the Licensed Practical Nurse certification. This career choice gave her the opportunity to work in several hospitals and private practices in the Birmingham area.

After relocating to Georgia, she united with New Hope Missionary Baptist Church of Powder Springs. There she served as not only a faithful member, but also served several years as Church Secretary. She was full of personality and leadership qualities. She was never content to be just a member, and served a term as Worthy Matron of Villa Rica Eastern Star Chapter No. 138. She also served a term as President of the Silhouettes of the Carrolton-Douglasville Alumni Chapter of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Incorporated.

Although nursing was her vocation and service was her calling, sewing was her passion. She often said “If I can see it, I can go home and make it.” Carrie did everything from alterations for family and friends to quilts and rugs. During her final months, she convinced the hospital staff to allow her to have her sewing machine brought to the hospital. During that time she made multiple quilts. When the pandemic struck, she shifted her focus and made dozens of masks for family and hospital staff.

Carrie was preceded in death by her parents and her brother, Cleveland Ward, Jr. She is survived by her husband Michael, her children, Terry Holston of Sandy Springs, GA, Brandon Holston of San Diego, CA, and Nicole Wilder of Hiram, GA; one sister, Martha Jones of Birmingham; three brothers, Jerry Ward of Birmingham, Jan (Renee) Ward of Atlanta, and Fred Ward of Birmingham; two granddaughters, Madison Wilder and Jasmine Oden; Godson Silas Alexander, IV; a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives, and friends.

Services entrusted to W.E. Lusain Funeral Home of Birmingham, Alabama.

To Mike and family: I only met you and your son and daughter once when I brought Carrie a cake over on Mother’s Day before she entered the hospital. I spoke with her several times in the hospital. I loved Carrie from the day I met her in our Embroidery and quilting circle. I treasured her friendship and she was on my heart as I had not spoken to her in a long while. I called this morning and left her a message and then found out that she had passed away and I am in shock. My condolences to you all. She was such a sweet soul.

Ms. Carrie had the most gentle calming spirit that drew you in. Her beautiful smile was engaging. I fondly recall our conversations over Kappa Silhouette business. I could depend on Ms. Carrie to objectively listen to a situation and provide wise counsel. I will miss Ms. Carrie’s smile and kind spirit. Rest well my dear Silhouette Sister.

Aunt Carrie, you were truly one of a kind. In my earliest memories of you, I can always remember being so amazed by you. You were always one of the most beautiful women I knew. You were funny, charming, witty, smart, and so much more. You were my idea of what every mother and wife aspired to be. Thank you for loving me, but most importantly, thanks for the love that you provided everyday to Uncle Mike, Terry, Brandon, Nicole, and even Tiny and Plummie. You were truly filled with so much love and compassion for others. Though I wish I had done it sooner, I look forward to learning more about your life and you as a person. Love you always.

Carrie was my neighbor in West Goldwire Estates. She graduated from the same high school as myself, and as an adult....we messaged each other on FB. She was a smart, lovable, mature and beautiful. I am so darn proud that I even knew of such a person like this special lady!

I will always be grateful for Carrie's friendship. She was the epitome of grace and always had a big, beautiful smile. I was able to visit her in March just before hospitals were closed to visitors. We had lunch together and just enjoyed each other. Carrie fought so hard over the months to stay with us, and her faith never waivered. Rest in Heaven, my dear friend. Always in my heart.

This morning I just wanted to share this story with you and Carrie's love ones. My dear friend Carrie will always be special in my heart. Carrie and I met in 2006 at a Kappa event. Right away Carrie and I realized that we had a lot of things in common. We shared recipes, sewing activities and stories about how we met our Kappa man. Carrie was not only smart, she was pretty, loving, had an awesome laugh , she was also sweet and she would even give you the shoes off her feet. Carrie had one very special love at the top of her list and that would be little "Mattie"and then of course Mike and the rest of her children. In spite of Carrie's illness , she found time to come to my home and we made little shirts and dresses (Global Impact Project for Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority) for the needy children on the island of Haiti. Yesterday , I received these videos and pictures of the happy children in their new clothes. If Carrie was here , she would say, "God bless the children"!!!!

We love you Carrie, may you rest in peace from your dear friend & Silhouette Sister Betty "BJ"Jones♦️

Silhouette Carrie Holston will be sorely missed by the Carrollton Douglasville Kappa Silhouettes. She was a faithful servant, not only to her local chapter, serving a term as President, but she also served regionally as the Southeast region Treasurer, until she had to step aside due to her illness. Always willing to serve in the earthly realm, she has now accepted the highest calling of service. Beverly White, CDAC Silhouettes of GA.

Slap at the Airport

July 3, 2020
I remember one year flying into Atlanta airport to visit Mike and Carrie. They had called me to let me know they were in the area and I had gathered my luggage and was waiting outside the terminal. I was looking left and right for either the car, or for Mike or Carrie. Suddenly, from behind me I felt a 'love tap' on my right cheek. Upon turning immediately in that direction, there was Carrie, grinning from ear to ear while saying "looking for us?". Then she grabbed me and gave me a big hug! That was Carrie always, fun, playful, caring. We miss her smile and her wise cracks (she had sarcasm down to a science). Memories we will cherish forever.
