Casper Sheppert was born on November 30, 1938 in Newberry, SC. He was the second of four children to the late James E. and Tobitha (Lever) Sheppart. All of his siblings preceded him in death: James Ellis Sheppert, Evelyn Johnson and Laura Simmons.

At an early age Casper, affectionately called "Shep" by many, moved with his parents to Newark, NJ where he began his education and career. He attended public school in the NJ public school system. Casper attended Southside High School where he graduated in 1956.

As a young adult Casper met and married Geneva Johnson on October 14,1986. He was affiliated with Freestone Lodge#66 in Newark, NJ. Casper served as a secretary and past faithful member of this lodge. Shep worked for the NJ Transit Authority until his retirement.

Casper loved meeting and talking to people. He loved animals, especially birds and pigeons in which he received many awards. Casper's other hobbies were fishing and bowling. He also loved to travel, especially to Kentucky where he went annually and actively participated in the Kentucky Derby.

Shep's spiritual walk with God started in Newark, NJ while attending Union Chapel A.M.E. and Abyssinian Baptist Church.
