Cassidy loved birthdays… even when it wasn’t his actual birthday. Eric (Cass’ stepbrother) and I took the drive down from the Bay Area one year to visit my folks in LA. We met up with a friend, Majed (our future best man), on the hill to do a little fishing and boarding for Majed’s birthday. Although this was their first meeting, Cassidy and Majed became fast friends. (To be honest, I can’t imagine anyone Cassidy couldn’t charm with his infectious laugh and youthful spirit.) That night, the two walked arm and arm, bursting through every bar’s threshold, proclaiming “It’s my birthday, what do I get?” Boy, did they cleaned up, with round after round of free shots, and even singing some random karaoke song together. Years later, Eric and I met Majed and his wife in Palm Springs. When the topic of birthday plans came up, he told me that that one year was his favorite to recall. Picture it, a quiet bodybuilding immigrant, in Big Bear for the first time, suddenly becomes the king of the hill for the night, thanks to the special escort by the Mayor. “So what if he called me Magic? It was a magical night, cold but magic.”
